Another Tsunami Question

Recommended Posts

There are a ton of tsunami videos out there on the internet now. From what I have seen it looks like a major high tide that just consumed everything in its path.

My question is and maybe they just havent gotten it on video; was there ever a 20-30 foot wave moving at 500 mph like originally reported?

Yes, several of the waves measured that high. And some were caught on video, as well. I've seen it several times on the different news channels. But keep in mind that this wouldn't have been easy to catch on video; those who saw it that high are mostly dead.

There was an interesting series on Tsunamis last night on Discovery channel...I am sure they will replay it this week. Keep an eye out for it.

That's pretty much what you're seeing. Just cos you don't see it breaking and it only reaches it's greatest hight after several minutes... doesn't mean it's not a "wave", just that the wavelength is much longer.

The high tide you describe is simply a very long wave... it still travels across the Ocean fast and is still 20-30 ft high.

What makes me somewhat crazy is how all the documentaries show normal wind-made waves as footage for tidal waves. Tsunamis act differently. They were called tidal waves because they acted like a tide, just a very quick and extreme one.

Think of a tsunami more like flooding from a dam burst, only the dam is in the middle of the ocean. Sure, there's a breaking wave in front of it but that's caused by gravity. It's a wall of water - a wall of water that may be several miles thick. In essence, like a tide, the local sea level increses by a few feet for a few minutes.

Also, the wave will slow down and build amplitude as the sea depth decreases. The horizontal energy (speed) gets translated into water heighth. So it slows down, but builds in height the closer it gets to the shore.

From what I've read (some time ago so I hope I remember it right) when the wave is in deep water it is travelling very fast but only causes a very small displacement on the surface. When it starts going into shallower water the wave slows down but the amplitude increases, turning into the wave or 'high tide' that causes so much devastation.

Basically, as I understand it, it does move at 500mph and it is a 20-30 ft wave, just not at the same time.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

That's the way I've heard it, too. Out in deep water the wave comes and goes almost without notice. That's one of the safest places to be during a tsunami alert.
