Hackey Sack

Recommended Posts

Hey

I just returned to skydiving after a 23 year hiatus.

When I was active back in the day, it was very common to see nearly everyone at the DZ playing Hackey. The first time I had ever seen or heard of hackey was at the DZ. Playing supposedly was good for flexibility and quick reactions.

Since I've been back, I've only seen hackey sacks on pilot chutes!

What happened?

Let's all do this safe enough that we can still do this in our 90's.

Well, duh, we sewed them all on our pilot chutes. :P

Seriously, I think the turbines killed the hackey sack. No more long waits for your turn at the Cessna or waiting for enough to show up to fill the DC-3. Now it's pack/jump/pack/jump/pack/jump. At least, that what happened at our DZ when we went turbine. IMHO.

I could see that. We still hack at my 182 DZ and at the other 182 DZ I'll sometimes visit.

Not that we're any good at kicking a hackey sack around, but we do try...and try...and try...:P

When the weather is bad & no one can think of anything dangerous to do on the ground, we play hacky sack @ our turbine dz. We even got a little hacky ball (like volleyball, but w/ a MUCH lower net & feet instead of hands) goin on - very fun!!

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.

PMS #227 (just like the TV show)

I've been on a mission to keep this alive at my DZ for the past few years. It's sociable, non-competitive and a great way to get warm in the winter. And although it doesn't look like it to an observer, it gives you a pretty good workout! It's kind of a forgotten pastime, I think - most people who play for the first time get hooked pretty quickly. As far as I can make out you can't buy a decent hack anywhere in the UK, though - mine get shipped all the way from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. :)

Our DZO made a hackyball court in Utah years back. Soon everyone was playing that damn game and not jumping. Oh well, at least the Cessna was not backed up. :P

It is a good diversion on cloudy days. Rabbit hunting was our other diversion at the old DZ.

Hey Mike!

it's not forgotten, we are quite active hackey-sackers at the turbine DZ I jump in Canada

The track-hack is where it's at! (we once got a circle of about 8 people going and 'tracked' it all around manifest and some trees while hacking.)

cheers
sam

soon to be gone
