sciatica

Recommended Posts

I think I have sciatica (pinched nerve in my back). Anyone else have it and how did you treat it? I've found stretching and yoga really help, as well as wearing a back brace.

I really want it to get better before the season starts again. Any recommendations?

If it is a fresh flare up, 1-2 days of bed rest max. Follow up with ibuprofen 600 mg three times a day for a week, and then light stretching/excercise such as walking, and flexion and extension excercises for the back. If persists greater then 3 weeks, seek family doc, you may benifit from a steriod taper.

sciatica=pain..............

just waiting on mri results..
weeks of pain in tip of tail bone-
out to right tip of hip bone,
down front of leg-
throbbbbing pain, cold knee,
down to shooting pain into foot.
Doc says, takes a month or more to heal?
Sciatic inflamation-? or herniated disk?
I have not hurt myself in any way-
take anti inflamatory, pain meds,
sleep on back with knees up,
do not sit- walking now relieves pain,...stretching exercises......

SMiles;)

Ya, I've got this. Stretching really helps. Also I visit a Chiropractor and she does adjustments plus more stretches which makes a big difference.

I haven't needed to take any drugs for it yet. As long as I'm limber it doesn't flare up. If I sit too long or get really stiff thats when the pain comes back. (But then an adjustment takes the pain away enough where I can handle it)

Good luck! I'm trying to get myself all limber and healthy for the season, too! :)

Good luck with this. Mine has never healed fully after getting hit by a drunk. The pain is with me daily, and many times I have to keep my shoes off to get thru the day. Yes, it has kept me out of the air...a lot. I used to be able to do 13 jumps in a day with no problem, now I'm lucky if I can handle 4. One bad opening has me out for a month or more...which is why I will be selling my Stiletto for a Pilot soon.

The pain path is the same for me, but mine can also shoot up my back at times. No one will believe you in how much it hurts just to sit down, be still, sit in the plane, etc. Mine healed a bit after the accident when I was on my back for about four months - but that caused me to put on the extra weight I now carry. About two years ago I got back into shape and went skiing and made it worse and even lost control of my leg one morning (no feeling in it). So, this is something you will need to really keep an eye on. I had a terrible opening on my last jump at Rantoul - I saw stars on a borrowed canopy. I've made four jumps since that.

You know what helped me the most? Standing as much as possible. I did this photography stint for two weeks where we stood for at least eight hours a day...I've never felt better.

Watch out how much you work out, if you irritate it you will be in a world of hurt. Stretching helps. My PT helped me with the right ones for me...make sure you find out what is right for you.

I'd recommend investing $10 and an open mind to one of Dr Sarno's books on back pain. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0446392308/qid=1105427027/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-9415150-8145424?v=glance&s=books
(if no link; Amazon search:John Sarno)

No doubt about the benefits of stretching & massage. But there is another way to eliminate an often more fundamental source of sciatica pain..

A few years back, I happened to catch Dr. Sarno on Larry King just as Howard Stern called in to sing his praise. I was struck by Sterns experience & testimonial & checked Sarno's book out..

Often there is a quite simple remedy for sciatica that many find difficult to believe until they try it.

To oversimplify: It begins with the recognition that very often the pain is being generated & aggravated by muscles contracting around nerves due to stress - even if the painful area was subject to prior trauma - the current pain could be due to stress.

Learning how to consciously identify the source of the pain & tell the muscles to relax - allows the pain subside within hours. Just identifying the problem in your own mind releaves the stress & the pain.

I can testify that practicing Sarno's technique has "cured" the chronic "bad back" & sciatica I had for more than 20 years.

I have been very active in "younger men's sports" - weight lifting, mixed martial arts, hockey, etc - I can throw myself into all the fun stuff that doctors & friends & chiropractors told me I'd have to stay away from 20 years ago and my back feels better than ever.

I get gimpy every once in a while due to over exertion & stress - but it's only for a day or two & then the pain's gone.

Sarno's method may not be right for you but if it is, you'll be very glad you took the time to consider it.

Yup, I use that technique too. Plus self-massage (no, you sickos, on my back!) Deep breathing and conciously relaxing your muscles really helps.

Sciatica is a pain in the ass.

I had it. Bad. Bad enough that I was flat on my back and on massive pain killers for months on end. Caused by two destroyed discs.

Tried stretching. Tried steriod shots. What worked was having the discs removed and the vertebrae fused.

I still get that pain in my ass occasionally but nowhere near the extent it was. The surgery gave me my life back.

Hope yours isn't as bad as mine was. :S
