Have to call BS on this one.

It's right up there with the earthquakes that are supposed to happen with planetary alignment and the mysterious red dwarf sun that suposidle going to pass our sun last year causing the earth to rotate in the opposite direction.
You would think there is enough mystery and wonder in the universe already without trying re write Star Treck plots!!

Of the sun which is producing light, or off the millions of star making up the milky way which produce their own light too?

Could it be that the simplest answer is that there is nothing perfectly flat or strait occuring naturally in nature?:o
