Shotgun 1 #27 January 14, 2005 Interesting... Snopes says it's wrong too, but it's a neat story... http://www.snopes.com/sports/golf/18holes.htm
BIGUN 1,483 #28 January 14, 2005 Hmmm.... Snopes or a golf magazine over the Museum of Edinburgh. Who snopes snopes? Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
mr2mk1g 10 #29 January 14, 2005 Both snopes and the golf magazine state it is wrong - read the answer to the question on the golf page: QuoteThe Golf Guru heard from a lot of proponents of this charming tale. It sounds good, especially after 18 shots of whiskey, but, alas, it is completely untrue.

ScottishJohn 25 #31 January 14, 2005 It's not the size of the bottle it's the size of the measure they pour out of the bottle. Here in England when you buy whisky (or whatever spirit) then the optics tatched to the bottle measure out a 5th of a gill (4 Gills make a pint) Although you can still find bars in Scotland that sell a 3rd of a Gill for spirits and a Gill of fortified wine.---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think my attitude stinks you should smell my fingers
Shotgun 1 #32 January 14, 2005 QuoteHmmm.... Snopes or a golf magazine over the Museum of Edinburgh. Who snopes snopes? I'm sure that not everything on snopes is correct, and I don't know anything about the golf guru... If you saw it at the Museum of Edinburgh, there is probably a good chance it's true... Who knows, it sounds good to me...

That's interesting... But in the US, people use the term as if they are referring to the size of the bottle... like "I drank a whole fifth of whiskey last night" and they are obviously referring to drinking quite a bit... so I had just wondered how much that actually meant... Most recently, I heard someone talking about a guy who died after "drinking a whole fifth of booze"... so that really made me curious...
