GeordieSkydiver 0 #1 January 14, 2005 I just bought a VW T25 Westfalia camper van, I've never owned one before. I'd like a splitty, but they are expensive. Whats it like? This one is gonna be for bumming around the DZ at weekends and the odd trip into mainland Europe to Emphuria etc.Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk

mx757 4 #3 January 14, 2005 I used to have a 1976 VW westfalia camper.. I sold it after I bought my 1991 Westfalia camper. I like the later westfalia campers better. the 2.1L engine is bit slow starting off line but will run 70 mph all day long. be sure your good mechanic.. parts often take days to get from vendors and VW dealers have to order every part I've ever needed.. I'm pleased with mine however...
AggieDave 6 #4 January 14, 2005 QuoteVW dealers have to order every part I've ever needed.. Fuck going through a VW dealer for an older VW. There are a good handful of companies I trust for order good quality parts for older VWs (especially aircooled). I'll be happy to post a short list if wanted.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

Affirmative All we had was a 1600 cc single carb camper among other VW's don't know about the new stuff but the dealer routine is what it is regardless of what you paid for the vehicle the dealers mechanic rates and parts will cost you a big bundle. VW's are/were manufactured in other countries so there should be lots of alternate sources for parts. Don't know if a reguler person can work on todays hi tech stuff, fuel injection, computer chips. etc. Dual carbs The VW campers (single carb) were great, could do your own maintenence, Pop top when you needed it etc. Just a little underpowered (stay in rt hand lane) and cold in the winter without the extra heater. Check out my site. www.scirocco20v.co.uk Here's a quick pic of the van... Thanks Dave, I'm fairly well connected for VW parts.. even aircooled.Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk
AggieDave 6 #7 January 14, 2005 Nah, dual carbs and the early fuel injection on VWs isn't hard to work on. You just have to know how to do it and buy a couple of specialized tools...especially when tuning dual carbs. IDF 44s are the worst, talk about a pain in the ass. Kardons are pretty easy to tune, though.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

You talking a split window van with the windows on the top? We had a VW dual cab pick up maybe a 1968 model great truck sides & back folded down to a flat bed. In the northern US they use way to much salt on the roads in the winter (snow & ice) lot's of the nice old cars just rust away.... R.I.P.
Girlfalldown 0 #11 January 14, 2005 OMG that's like my dream come true! That's it. I'm selling everything I own and buying a Westfalia to live in. -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)

GeordieSkydiver 0 #14 January 15, 2005 QuoteYou talking a split window van with the windows on the top? Yeah, its the front windscreen that is split into 2 seperate parts. There are companies over here in England that import them from California, rust free!Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk

Amazon 7 #16 January 15, 2005 Not me man.... I was FAR FEG NUGGENEED to death when I was in college.. I had a BUNCH of those things.. and drove them from Guatemala City Guatemala....in the south to Inuvik NWT on the Mackenzie Delta.(.think Arctic Ocean) in the North... I used to carry a spare engine and rollaway jack to change said engine when I went on theose trips.. stuffed it right under the fold down bed. I had 3 spare tires.. two of them lashed up top... and LOTS of bug spray.
flyingferret 0 #17 January 15, 2005 1972 Westfalia Camper, in white. Although, it is in bad repair right now at my parents. No time/place/money in the right combo to fix it up. But man it would rock as a dz wagon.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
Amazon 7 #18 January 15, 2005 Get it running just enough to get to Mexico.. MAN you used to be able to get some good work donoie on one down there. I had several vans completely rebuilt down there.
flyingferret 0 #19 January 15, 2005 Well, with Dave's help I could overhaul the damn thing really. But I need a little time, and a little space (a shop preferably) and some money. The last two are hardest. Honestly as a 25 year, paying of a harley, and cheap ford focus, and financing jumping and life....it is a lower priority.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. AggieDave 6 #20 January 15, 2005 Whats sad is it has a good 1835cc engine with dual Kardons...all it needs is some TLC and new seals and a basic rebuild most likely with very few parts. I could put his Bus back on the road in a weekend, but he won't do it. I even have the specialized tools, engine stand, etc...but noooooo.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #21 January 15, 2005 QuoteAlthough I will get myself a splitty one day You mean a 21 window Type 2? If so, get a safari...the front glass folds out...basically its the perfect Type 2 IMO...build a nice strong engine, like a 2110 with dual Kardons or IDF 44s, lower it 2" and you'll have a badass and fun type 2. With enough power to hang on the highway with NO problems. *drool* I want one someday...first I have to come up with the money to rebuild my '73 1302 Type 1 (super beetle) engine...all I need is a new case, bearings, crank, cylinder and jugs...and I'm in business....since I found out the heads I have are still good and the top end is still good when I finally tore apart the engine last week. Atleast I can build it with 92mm cylinder and jugs and have some nice power, even with my weber progressive and the 041 heads I have and since the cylinder wall thickness is the same as stock with the 92's it'll be pretty reliable. penniless 0 #25 January 17, 2005 Once upon a time I had a '69 pop top VW camper. Drove it coast to coast, including over 12,000ft in the Rockies with 7 on board. Man, was it ever slow at altitude.
