adamjenner 0 #1 January 21, 2005 a friend of mine has really sensitive ears like, if she were to go out in the cold her ears will pop and what not.and she really wants to do a tandem jump. now i know that with a cold and all and with the fast altitude drop of a skydive, ears can burst. but where she just has sensitive ears does anyone really know if it would be safe for her to take a tandem jump or not? I'll still talk it over with my DZO but since the season's a few months away because of winter i figured i'd get her some advice/information on it right now. any suggestions? thanks
AggieDave 6 #2 January 21, 2005 1. Have her talk to an ears/nose/throat doc... 2. have her ride as observer in the plane and see if that hurts her ears. The plane doesn't experience pressure changes quite as badly and agressively as in a skydive, even in a turbine diving back to earth. That is a cheap way to see if it sucks for her or not.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

Its true the pressure doesnt change as quickly, but for me for some reason it really hurts to come down in the plane, but i feel nothing during skydives. I figured it would be just the opposite. Not sure why that happens I've never felt ear pain like riding the Super Otter down. Must have been the radical dives the pilot was doing. I've flown around the world (look at a globe and circle the equator) 3.5 times in miles and I used to get some ear problems. Nothing like I felt the few times I rode the plane just to get a thrill when I had a broken collar bone. Guess it depends on the pilot and how aggressive they fly. CygnusX-1 43 #6 January 21, 2005 QuoteNot sure why that happens I think it’s called adrenaline. I’ve had sensitive ears for some time. It would bother me even while driving up/down hills. I’m not saying that they hurt or pop. It is more of an annoyance. But, I have never had a problem with skydiving. Probably because the first thing I do under canopy (after checking that everything is ok) is re-equalize the pressure in my ears. Another thing I have noticed that helps is I deliberately try not to clear my ears on the flight to altitude above 10,000 ft.

What is "what not"? ever get the feeling when you're going up a steep hill or something and your ears feel like they're clogged and if you yawn or open your mouth wide it goes away? that's your ear popping. she gets it quite a bit because of something that happened with her sinuses as a child. and she was just wondering if it would be safe for her to skydive or not. i wasn't too sure myself. I think she'll probably go to a doctor first and get it checked out.

I must say nay! An observer ride in Mullins' plane ALWAYS ends up in ear pain for me. I've never had ear pain from a skydive. It's your life, live it! Riding with Mullins, in his plane is a bit different then most... I'm thinking that up in Canadia she's probably not going to be riding in Mullin's KA.
