Zenister 0 #26 December 20, 2004 snowboards rock... but then i did try skiing again last year when i didnt bring any gear north with me (didnt plan on staying so....) of course i was smart enough to pay for a lesson since i hadnt stood on skis since i was 9... and had an absolute blast... even if i did by a few pitchers in the lodge for a few 'lawn sale' stops at the base.... of course your balance point and habits are completely different.. i must have lost a ski 4 times on the lifts when i forgot i needed to pick BOTH feet up....____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. craddock 0 #29 December 21, 2004 I started Snow skiing when I was four. Raced a bit when I real young on shitty gear, and had always considered myself an expert skier until my first trip out west when I was about 18. I went our an Expert and came back an intermediate Started Snowboarding a few years back and absoulutly love it. I took to it like a fish to water.(lots of skateboarding, wakeboarding exp) I just love carving at High speeds down the mountain. Give it a few more chances you will come around. It is very easy for most to learn to ski, but they can spend the rest of their life trying to master it. Snowboarding can be much more difficult for most to initially earn, but much easier to become very proficent at. Once you learn to ride the, learning curve is much easier than skiing. I think that is why some are so old school and resistent to the younger generations preference of snowboarding. They hate to see someone with a couple years of riding go everywhere they will and keep up. I had a major knee surgery in September (bad fracture of tibia plateau along with tearing out the meniscus) that was plated and screwed together , but I can't wait to visit my buddy in CO and shred the mountain up. Not sure if I should be out this year, Doc said 9 months before I am back to full strength. You owe yourself another chance, it is super easy once you get the hang of it. That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side.

PhreeZone 20 #31 December 21, 2004 Cliff, Skiing in Ohio sucks. Snowboarding is even worse. I've been going to Mad River since I was 15. Damn has it been that long... . MAd River totally is not the place you want to learn how to board at. I sucked, then sucked some more then royally sucked even more before finally getting the basics only to have spring come and melt it all away. MRM is way too icey usually to snowboard. Its usually a top coating of 2-3 inches ground ice on top of 24 inches of solid ice. If you really want to learn take a snow day the day or two after a few inches of natural falls with them making. They actually get the "powder" to be about 4-5 inches and what a difference it makes. If you and your kids ever want to go let me know, I currently never go because I hate going by myself. Plus I've got some vac days I have to use before the end of Feb or I loose them.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

sundevil777 102 #33 December 21, 2004 Thanks Eric. It is encouraging to know that the ice is likely much of my problem. All the more reason to stick with what I can already do, since it is usually icy. The whole family went Saturday, they will go without me tomorrow because I can't even breath hard without pain. I have off of work until the 4th of Jan, and I doubt that I will be well enough to ski by then. It would have been great to meet up with you there. It will happen, I just have to heal first. ThanksPeople are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
wingnut 0 #34 December 21, 2004 i learnd to ski on the great ohio ice (mansfield(snow trails)) and then took up boarding about a year after that... been doing it since 94 and love it.... got to board in austria, germany and now in uath, get to some real snow and it makes a world of diffrence!! nothing like carving downthe mountain (andi do mean mountain, none of wich yo will find in ohio) with 6 inches of fresh powder, it feels so much diffrent than skiing..... leaning close to the hill and dragging a hand across the snow in a sharp carve....ahhh, i'm not much for the terain parks and doing tricks,i just like to ride....... a couple pics from austria in 97'.. a mountain called "hockzieger" www.onthesnow.com/AT-TY/678/ check it out, a 1000M vertical drop and a 7km run (if you go to the base of the gondola) the tabogin run was kick ass to and we went on that with a 5 year old.... and a 14,000 per hour lift capacity..... i so want to go back, that was the best winter vaacation i've ever had!!! ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"

d_squared431 0 #38 December 21, 2004 I am sorry you had a bad experience but it was probably due to the snow conditions. If you come to Tahoe I will teach you for free. I saw that a few of you are coming up this way to ride. Alpine has 39.00 tickets and great terrain. If anyone wants to meet up for a few runs let me know. That is if you can keep up just kidding. Also Mt Rose hosts Elvis day every year and this year they hired a few base jumpers to jump dressed as elvis on on january 8th. Did I mention there are free drinks all day. RevJim 0 #39 December 21, 2004 I've been skiing since I was 5, medaled in X-country at age 7, started downhilling at 9, and pretty much gave it all up at ~20. It's been 14 years, and I've really been toying with the idea of season lift passes on this little knob of a hill local, called Nordic Mountain. I really want to get back on the hill, and try boarding, but have no idea how I would pay for a board (rental or buy) if I managed to get the cash for the season passes (I'd have to get family passes) and lessons (ditto on the family plan). Some days it does suck to be a poor college student. (1 speech left and the first 17 credits are OVER!) Be happy you people are able to spend that kind of time with your families out and about, ragardless of how well you did. It's your life, live it! Evelyn 0 #40 December 21, 2004 So sorry you had a bad experience, but I can totally relate. I was never a great skier, but found snowboarding much easier than skiing. Started snowboarding with my daughter about 5 years ago and love it. For me snowboarding was much easier than skiing. But my husband, who is a really good skier, decided to try snowboarding with me. We spent the entire day on the bunny slope, he could not stay up. Very frustrating for both of us. So now he sticks to skiing and my daughter and I snowboard.
