Snowboards suck!

Recommended Posts

I am so stupid for thinking that I should go ahead and try one this year.

I am a competent skier, and should have known to stick to that.

Instead I got (probably) broken ribs.

They're a bitch to even get up on, and just generally seem like a lot harder to control.

Fuck them!

Thats what i though the first time i tried. How did you hurt yourself? did you start on the bunny slopes to get used to it?

Ya, I was on the bunny slope.

They suck!

Why would I think there is some advantage to the board?

It was totally easy for me to ski because I had good ice skating skills, am able to do a good sliding/hockey stop. This transferred over to skiing great.

Awsome!!! I'm somewhat of a proficient skier and I'm going snowboarding over New Years!!! YEAH!!

I've ridden a nnow board only 2 times (not 2 days... just 2 times) and it was fun and easy to pick up on. Then again, skateboarding as a kid probably had something to do with that.

was it really icey when you went? that was my problem. I couldn't turn or stop. I could scream down the hill and then fall and bust my ass to slow down. The next time i tried it it was soft powder a couple inchs thick and it made a huge difference.

If you dont like snowboarding you dont have to do it. I snowboard now after switching from skiing and i like it better. But do what ever you want. Its all about hvaing fun and not about pleasing someone else. so i say stick to skiing and have fun on the slopes.

Huh? I find them incredibly easy to ride and was riding very, very steep terrain thirty minutes after I first strapped one on. Anyone who can ride a skateboard, surf, or wakeboard (especially similar) can snowboard almost immediately with confidence.

Ditto. I tried it for the first time last march, and found it to be a lot like wakeboarding. The only thing i needed to remember was that there was no rope to help keep my ass out of the snow.:D

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

I was there last year when my kids took a few lessons on their boards.

It was very icy, all man-made snow.

I will stick to skis from now on, after I heal.

Evil fucking plank!

So, is that a yes or no to my question of "Did you take a lesson?

No, I didn't take a lesson, I witnessed the crap quality of their lessons last year.

Maybe if I had an inflatable sumo wrestler type of gag costume to wear I could put up with being slammed down.

You only have no place to go around your house? If so ok that sucks, if you do then try them. You know damn well as a skier that its hard to learn something new in crappy conditions.

Too bad you thought they offered crappy lessons.

I took lessons years ago when I was first learning. I was very lucky to get the quality I got. I would sign up for a group lesson during the week after dropping my boys off at school, and since it was a week day, I ended up getting two instructors. Private lessons for the cost of a group lesson.

Find yourself a place that you think will give you good lessons and take a 1/2 day lesson. You will learn more then how to fall.

I took up snowboarding back in 1990 when soft bindings first were coming out. I learned on a burton 152 with hard bindings that you used ski boots on. I found it to be sooo easy. I never tried skiing and have stuck with a board ever since.

Although I havent been snowboarding in 7 years, I still have my trusty Kemper Fanton 162 sitting in the computer room with me.

I'm sure that ill get to use it again someday.

Very Nice!!

We are thinking of hitting Heavenly in Tahoe when we drive out to see Derek's Mom in January.

btw....since you are my size, do you need to borrow snow pants and jacket? Come to think of it, you guys should have come to CO, I have 2 of everything, you wouldn't have to rent a thing. ;)

I've been a skier since I was 17 (16 years), I've been skiing almost every year in that time and spent 6 months in Canada skiing every weekend.

I'm a reasonably confident and proficent skier.

When I first tried snowboarding it sucked. I did a 'day' here and a 'day' there, with no continuity, I knew the basics and kept getting hurt trying to progress. (whiplash anyone?) I never had a lesson.

I taught 3 of my friends the basics of snowboarding (I'm a ski instructor too) and then I went back to skiing while they carried on boarding and progressing.

After 3 months I looked at them 'almost' keeping up with me down black runs, and realised what they'd done, that I didn't.

They KEPT AT IT.

The next week, I vowed to strap that nasty piece of chipboard to my feet and not take it off till I could do Lake Louise top to bottom without falling over or stopping.

The first couple of days sucked. I was sore, pissed off and left behind all the time. I was contemplating throwing the board and sticking my 170's on to have some fun in the park.

Then while struggling down another slope, some instructor called "mad dog" sat next to me on a lift and we BS'ed. He told me to relax, go across the hill and look where I'm going.

I took his advice, and the next day something happened. I suddenly wasn't so far behind, my ass wasn't as wet, and I was SMILING:)
The next couple of days changed my whole perspective of boarding, I quickly caught up to my buddies level, and I was having fun again.

It suddenly all made sense, and it was better than skiing (ok, maybe similar, but its close)

Sorry for the ramble, I'll summerise...

1. Take a lesson.

2. Perservere. (think of it as re-taking a AFF jump, but with pain):S

Its worth it, check out http://www.geordielee.co.uk/home/Skiing/skiing.html
for some pictures...

Ok, I need to go boarding now.....:P
