When weather.com says "windy"...

Recommended Posts

I hate it when weather.com says "windy" since that's a site for whuffos and whuffos don't notice anything under about 12mph (atleast). So when weather.com says "breezy" they mean 15mph or so and when they say "windy" they mean between 20mph and 30mph.

It looks like surf will be down this weekend for the swooping...atleast in one direction it will be.

Damnit I hate it when we have over 20mph winds, its just not as fun.

Oh well, after not getting to jump since Dec 31, I'm definately motivated to go jump and jump I shall.B|

You should check out the description they put for the weather on the Chicago Sun Times - its an editorial every day about the weather on the front page.

Today it says "Enough Already" and I have seen "angry, odd, sad, cheerful, neverending rain, etc"

Yeah... I'm waiting to see what kind of winds are going to hit us here. We had some 35-40mph gusts a week or two ago that made things "interesting", to say the least. I'm not looking forward to getting hit down here with anything higher than that...

you might want to find your weather sourse another place like pro does..
pilots use metar and taf learn how to read thouse codes(it aint that bad) and you get better forcasts:P)
the tv weather forcast does what its best to.. entertain people even as they dont look at the tv.. their desribtion nearly never fit and we talk about it all the time:ph34r:

Here in the NW they have 20,000 different ways to describe precipitation. None of which cause us to stay inside, but most of which keep us from jumping (and lately, most of which have kept us off the slopes since it's been too damn warm). :(

But I digress. I have much more fun with www.skydivingweather.com

I agree with Faber in that aviation WX reports are the best source of weather forcasting info.

Now I definitely need to comment that Mother Nature looks like she's going to be messing with at least 1/2 of my weekend (Saturday here in Denver isn't looking all that nice despite the fact that yesterday was perfect jumping conditions). Doesn't the bitch know that I'm planning on jumping a new canopy this weekend and that reasonably nice weather would be appreciated to allow me to do some high altitude hop n' pops. >:(

I have 8 different sites (including the metar and taf) that I use for weather.

You know whats sad?

Weather.com tends to be the most accurate for this area.

You know what else is sad?

The "magic 8-ball" at the DZ that we have for weather prediction tends to be even more accurate then all of them (I'm not making that, no shit it really is!)

You're on the wrong side of the mountains. Richland Skysports (Tri-Cities) is in a semi-arid environment, with sand, sagebrush, heat, and of course seasonal winds that frequently ground us in the spring and fall. :-)

I heard a blurb on AFN radio yesterday about a "wind warning" in Germany.... winds of ~50mph expected...:o

We get a few storms like that in eastern Washington every year. They can be fun as long as you've got everything squared away before they arrive. Is it true that the winds howl through the "plains" states every year?

Ok, firstly HTML isn't used on the forums, its disabled...read the link that says "Get Markup Help" on a posting windwo.:P

Secondly, I was using Skydiving Weather in part with the 8 other sites I use until it started dicking me around. Sometimes being there, sometimes not being there, sometimes being offline for a week at a time. So at that point I simply deleted it from my list.

On top of that, I get the exact same forcast from NOAA's site.

Well, one thing I've noticed especially since I started skydiving is that the forecast isn't always accurate as far as temperature, clouds, rain, etc. But, when they forecast wind, it always seems to be accurate. And that's the weather channel, the local news, the paper and or weather.com. I never tried the Magic 8 Ball!

Yeah, but can I get decent sushi? ;)

One of these days I'll hop on I-90 and see what's going on out there in the frozen tundra.

I sat at Deland ALL DAY last Tuesday.........watching the wind socks flutter rapidly. I looked at it......watched some canopies........and said...."Nahhh. I'll wait till tomorrow if I have to." Later that day some girl with 50 jumps from Missouri crashed in. I heard she broke an arm.[:/] Why she was jumping I have NO idea. Certainly shouldn't have been. I waited till Wednesday morning and had a SWEET jump with a PHAT swoop right between the packing tent and the deck. Went all the way out at least 15Ft past the beer line. Major fun......AND worth the wait. I HATE jumping in wind! [:/]
