Flip or Flick?

Recommended Posts

My children are making me post this question on here. For some reason, they think you all will be the authority on this. :P

So, settle our dispute...do you flip or flick someone a bird?

Well, I'd have to say "flip" the bird. Though I'm an expert on *doing* it, I'm not really an authority on how it's said "properly" :P

You flip 'em the bird, but you flick 'em off!

I agree with Vallerina but did a google search on flick the bird and found quite a few references.
It surprised me. Of course I just refer to it like Mr. Bean did - "The Hawaiian Friendship Salute"

Shouldn't they be learning things like this in school, or from their peers ? Along with sexual practices and drug usage ?

They told me maybe the slang has changed since I was young, so maybe that's a good explanation for it.

Or you could also just call it communicating.....

Such as:
Goose: Communicating.
Maverick: Communicating. Keeping up foriegn relations. You know, giving him the bird!
Charlie: Yes, Goose, I know the bird.

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I read the first post.! :P

Yes, that is one of the irritating things about word usage. A lot of what is "correct" is just what is in widespread use. Word definitions are changed in dictionaries as they acquire new meanings through common usage, even though that would have be "incorrect" when first used.
