Do you watch or do you look away?

Recommended Posts

I watch. It's better than waiting for "the surprise jab".
I don't watch when my 3yr old boy gets shot,...etc.
(I always feel guilty too):(

Oh, I watch, and I encourage my kids to watch, too.

Getting over the sight of blood at an early age can be a life saver, for your children and for other children as well. Lots of kids get minor head wounds that bleed like MAD. If they can keep from panicking, or even better, keep a wounded kid from panicking, that's great stuff.

My eleven year old daughter had to go for a blood test so we talked about what the experience would be like. And it got me thinking:

When you are going to get stuck with a needle do you watch or do you look away?

I pass out. I can't look or even see blood if it is real. :o

Always watch, I used to be scared of the needles, once I learned to be a UK EMT I have to watch to make sure its done right. Then the fear left. Also having various drips in for blood/morphine etc helped.

Well, I'm lucky because I have *great* veins for poking at.. But intraveinus isn't the one that hurts--intramuscular is the bitch..

I was on Depo Provera for about 2 years--it's the needle in bum (or high on the thigh) every 3 months for birth control. I went every 6 weeks for the longest time until a different nurse realised a one inch needle would suit be better than the 2-inchers they'd always used before (I'm tiny). Go figure!!

I usually watch, but those long needles put me off. That, and I'd have had to be pretty contorted to look at them poking my behind!!!

BTW, I have horror stories about this drug--would NOT recommend it.

I see it at work all the time and it doesn't bother me. Had an IV in myself not to long ago and I dont remember if I watched or not, not real big on gettin poked with needles, but its not freeky like it is with some people. I just feel bad for the people, especially older folks, that have hard to find veins and got to be poked numerous times.

I nearly fainted when I saw my daughter's blood a week or so ago...B|

Then again, it wasn't an arm draw, I have a hard time even talking about it! It was...

I HATE needles so i look away and think of my fav tv show or movie and squeeze my other hand really tight.

The sight of blood doesn't bug me I think its actually kinda fasinateing to watch AFTER the needle is in.

I watch, it doesn't usually bother me. Only time I didn't was when I had to have blood drawn from an artery in my wrist. The had to dig around a little bit to find it, and seeing them move the needle around like that kinda freaked me out. :S

Now that I think about it, it was the only time I've been poked with a needle where they said "I'm not going to lie, this is going to hurt like hell"B|

I'd probably do best if the doctor shouted, "what's the over there!" and pointed off into space and then jabbed me in the arm when I wasn't looking.

The little bit of pain doesn't bother me, blood (my own or otherwise) doesn't bother me, and I'm generally fine once the needle is in. It's the doctor talking about it what he's gonna do, or why he's doing it, or how it works, or the dilly-dallying around with the needle in my field of view that I sometimes have issues with

I watch every time, too.

When I was a little kid, my dad would take me along when he would go back to my elementary school after-hours when they had a blood drive. I don't think I ever watched his donation, though. But it instilled in me the desire to give blood to help people out, so I made a regular practice of it from high school until about age 31, when they suddenly started saying that you couldn't donate if you'd visited England in such and such span of time, and for 3 months or more. So now they won't let me donate anymore. [:/] (What I'm wondering is, if people who were in England then can't donate in the U.S., what are they doing for blood IN England?? Doesn't that kind of rule out the population?

If they ever say that I can donate again, I surely will again. I always look. I remember a phlebotomist telling me to look away one time, and I was like, "Nope, I always watch when you do this." I kinda like seeing it. Since I never flinch about it (it hurts less and less the more you do it) there's no harm in watching, right? And I'd be more inclined to flinch if it came at me as a surprise anyway!

What on earth were they having to do that for?

Does anyone else feel that they kinda have the ability to disregard/shut out pain, especially if they know that it's not the result of anything that's going to cause lasting damage to their body?

I sometimes practice at focusing on the idea that my mind is utterly independent of whatever my body is feeling, so that I can be aware of something that hurts, but almost pretend that it's not happening to me, so that I can get past it. Anyone else do that?

I always watch when I'm being stuck with a needle. Always have. Now I'm a phlebotomist and I get to do the sticking. People are funny. It's the anticipation of being stuck with a needle that makes them squirm. I'm usually in and done before they know it.:)
I had one young guy I was about to draw some blood on, he was so nervous, he looked at me and said "I have to close my eyes...I don't like the sight of blood." As I was getting the needle ready, I said "I'm the same way." The look on his face was priceless.:D
