Slappie 9 #1 January 28, 2005 And I thought we had some full time trolls around here. I was looking at this and figured I would share it. I know we've got some Slashdotters around here. It's really interesting to read the history and break down of the Slashdot trolls. Dougiefresh 0 #2 January 28, 2005 I never read the Slashdot discussions. A bunch of over-opinionated people with a chip on their shoulder trying to convince someone with a totally different opinion of the importance (or lack therof) of an article. Sounds like one of the forums around here, come to think of it... Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams
livendive 8 #3 January 28, 2005 I was on cnn.com's message board during the last Seattle earthquake. I was worried about my family's new (to them) very old brick house, as well as a friend working very high up in a downtown skyscraper. Someone posted something along the lines of "Here's what it looks like right now outside my office window (downtown", and I mistakenly clicked it. It got me to the tubgirl.jpg picture referenced in that wikipedia article...by far the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life. I've thought a few times about disguising it and sending it to friends, but, well, that's just wrong! Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" flyingferret 0 #4 January 28, 2005 OH yeah /. is probably second only to usenet. Today there was even a submission that might as well be a troll http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/01/28/0319239&tid=126&tid=100&tid=137&tid=1 That is kind of why it cracks me up sometimes, this place is so young. Every time something happens people act is if they are discovering that a new form of behavior exists on the net. The same of behavior which other's told them about and ignored (like don't feed the trolls). Anyone who hangs out on other forums has seen all of this before. Read somethingawful, fark, /., etc and all of this is common place. The posters there have learned what is worth the time and what isn't. They are far past thinking they have to comment on everything. I would suspect all in all, they are a more net literate community.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. billvon 3,107 #5 January 28, 2005 Slashdot has a very interesting karma-based moderation system. Its effectiveness is subject to much debate, but it is an interesting way to deal with a large forum such as Slashdot.
Slappie 9 #6 January 28, 2005 QuoteSlashdot has a very interesting karma-based moderation system. Its effectiveness is subject to much debate, but it is an interesting way to deal with a large forum such as Slashdot. Yea I was reading about that Karma system. I never knew how it worked until today. I also never knew it grew out of a Sourceforge project and it's basically freeware that's constantly evolving. flyingferret 0 #7 January 28, 2005 You reference slashcode: http://www.slashcode.com/ pretty cool stuff really. The Karma system has some merit, although, I wonder how many people meta moderate. I tend to always put it off.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
Guru312 0 #8 January 29, 2005 This thread is funny! It is a troll as you can see by reading a part of the definition cited: "The purpose of deceptive trolls is to trick people into either following a link or reading a comment which seems legitimate but is actually a troll.? Does Slappie know he's being a troll by starting this thread? This thread can be endlessly recursive. And fully appreciated by ONLY those nerds and geeks who read Slashdot. In my case, I have to have three or four hits of Slashdot and DropZone.com per day or I feel all empty inside.Guru312 I am not DB Cooper

nathaniel 0 #10 January 29, 2005 There's a similar phenomenon in online games. It's a definition thats hard to define. Actually I wasn't being a troll. I kinda know the differences. I was just posting an interesting article I was reading and figured I would share it with my skydiving buds. Call me a troll or and asshole, I don't really care. I will always post interesting links to stuff I read or see online. This post was not made to incite a riot or deceive anyone. Slappie 9 #12 January 29, 2005 Very interesting links! My toons name in Evercrack is "Sir Twinked Uhlott" hahaha and he was deffinetly a "twink" in the sense he got some really nice equipment when I rolled him. Probably the only lvl 10 SK on my server with some of the weapons he had. Griefing is just like trolling, except I find it to be much worse. Trolling on forums people can ignore and move on to another post. Griefing in the gaming world is much worse due to the fact you just can't pickup your toon and move it. Much more complicated.
