MrRick 0 #1 January 29, 2005 I am just curious how many folks have a generator for back up power if the hydro goes out. I have one and 3 years ago it saved me a lot of grief when there was a ice storm and the power went out for 24 + hrs. It kept the furnace going ( natural gas) and the sump pump in the basement. freeflir29 0 #2 January 29, 2005 I have a 15K generator at the house in Montana. Of course........there is no public power source there so I don't have to worry about it going out.

Up north the power company is often called hydro....due to the hydro electric genetating stations Mr Rick...I dont have a generator yet...but plan on getting one....Nova Scotia power has had a bad year with the weather resulting in many long power outages ( over a week without was common this year )...the CTC store I work at wrote 178 rain cheques for one model when it when on sale over a month ago....I couldnt even guess at the number of generators sold in this province over the last year...but i bet they are stagering..and needless to say NSPC is not looking good in the public eye. freeflir29 0 #5 January 30, 2005 Quoteneedless to say NSPC is not looking good in the public eye. I got a good laugh out in Montana. The power company was trying to expand but most people in the area that didn't have power already told them to GET BENT. I have a set up at the house that's based on deep cycle batteries with a generator that you run every couple days to charge them up. Of course........If you want to do laundry or watch a movie the generator has to be on but all the lights and microwave operate like it's a normal house. I don't need the power company! There are ppl here starting to think the same way...some ppl in smaller communities have gone over a month without power (combined outages) this year..and the power company had the nerve to put in for a 14% rate increase... If you have about $5000 to invest you can have a nice power system that will cost you FAR less in the long run!

slug 1 #9 January 30, 2005 Hi We got a 5k generator for stby that came with the house. The previous owner bought it after a week long power outage. The generator just handles sections of the house. Since we bought the place there have only been outages less than 24 hr's but the stdby is nice when you need it. The down side is the generator needs to be run once in a while to keep it happy. No big thing (15 min/qtr) just something else to remember to do, or the unit might not work when you need it. R.I.P.
LouDiamond 1 #10 January 30, 2005 You need to talk to Bill Von if your serious about this as he actually sells power BACK to the power company on occassion albeit through a different system, solar I believe. There is a thread floating around out there with all the details of how his system is set up to include pictures of some of the components. I believe he has enough power to run his house if needed."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
cloudseeker2001 0 #11 January 30, 2005 I have two....a 1450kw and a 1750Kw and I can provide power to the entire neighborhood! Now, if I could just get these things out of the building I operate and to my house, I would be all set! Of course, I would have a small charge because the 1450 drinks 109gph and the 1750 drinks 89gph and I cannot afford the fuel! Big Cats get thirsty!
