Slow loris - NYCTICEBUS COUCANG

Endangered

Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
Subclass: True Mammals (Eutheria)
Order: First Order Mammals (Primatea)
Family: Lorisidae.

The word "Loris": "Loris" comes from an old Dutch word, "loeris," which means simpleton or clown.

Description: The slow loris' coat is dense, woolly and soft, and tawny in color with a black stripe along the back. Its short tail is entirely concealed by the fur. The face is rounded, with large eyes and small ears. The fingers and toes are short and thick, and the second toe on each hind foot has a long grooming claw. Length of head and body 9 to 15 in, and it weighs 1 to 3.3 lbs.

Location: Southeast Asia.

Habitat: Arboreal. Tropical forests.

Behavior: This is a nocturnal, tree-dwelling creature, feeding on fruit and insects. Its movements are even slower than those of the slender loris, but like that species, the slow loris lays an ambush for its prey and then, at the opportune moment, seizes it with a swift movement. The powerful musculature of the hands and feet enables it to keep a tight grip on the branches of trees, on which it hangs, asleep, throughout the daylight hours. It is a territorial animal and uses urine to mark its territory. It uses its tongue, grooming claw, and dental comb to clean its fur.

Reproduction: Gestation lasts between 90 and 180 days, at the end of which the female, which has four nipples, gives birth to a single young.
