Extended Car Warranties Rule!!

Recommended Posts

I got my 75K service last week, and soon after that I noticed my auto transmission was slipping when the engine was cold. Driving to work today, I'm coming down this bridge and I hear this "CLUNK!" and the tranny light comes on. Now it's slipping so bad, I barely could make it over a speed bump from a standstill!!

I got 74, 910 miles on a 75,000 mile extended warranty plan!!

Wooohooo!! Well, it sucks that I'll be without a vehicle while they fix it, but great that it will get fixed for free!!

I've had the following serviced under my ext warrantee (which I think was like $1400 when I bought the vehicle)

2 brand new radiators installed
water pump
rear diff rebuild
cd changer replaced
brakes replaced (faulty calipers)
Few other things... but those were the big ones.

I'd say well worth it. What are your thought on extended warranties ?

I'm not too sure about that. I mean sure some cars last more than others, but after 50,000 miles or so, things start to break down and die. Wouldn't it be nice to know that you have that little extra insurance in case something does happen ?

I was skeptical at first when buying my JEEP, but now I wish I would have gotten the 10yr/100K extended warrantee. [:/]

I never buy extended warranties because it only encourages engineers to make crappier products. Why should WE pay to guarantee that a product is made right? Plus, all the money I save by not buying extended warranties will pay for any repairs.

I always buy GM Pontiac Or Chevy so extended warranties
arn't really neededB|

haha.. my next vehicle is not going to be a domestic... I have had way too many problems with all the domestic cars/trucks that I have owned and know too many people that have imports that live forever even when they are beat on.

YMMV

Exactly. Have people considered that

should not be happening in the first 75k of the cars life. Granted one or two of the above list may be expected, but with a list like that I would reconsider the make of car I was buying. Eg. for some reason VW build quality has taken a nose dive in the last 2 or 3 years, so I'll be avoiding the rush to buy.

Extended warranties ARE a good thing, just DONT buy them from the auto dealer, they gouge the HELL outta you. There are PLENTY of GOOD extended warranties out there that you can purchase, many from you auto insurance agent, for a FRACTION of the cost you would pay at the dealer.

Just another thought.

I DIDN'T purchase an extended warranty for my 2001 Porsche. Last Sunday, the alternator went out. $1410.00 for the part/labor.

Fortunately, since the car was only 2 months out of warranty, Porsche paid for it anyway. Whew...

Of course I have an extended warranty on my 1999 Honda Accord, which never breaks down...

I spent $1500 on mine. It covered a bad differential gasket ($150) and tie rod ends (maybe $250).

The airbag which failed wasn't covered ($500), electrical not covered (a new cruise control switch was $400 including labor), etc.

Waste of money.

Failure rate curves are usually bathtub shaped. There are lots of early failures when you find manufacturing defects, which are covered under the factory warranty (my Triumph engine rebuild). Failures increase with age after the factory and extended warranties have expired. Not much happens in the couple of years following the factory warranty.
