Freediving!

Recommended Posts

Ok, who can tell me how to get started.

I have a good lung capacity built up when I was in South Africa waiting for my visa to the US. I stayed at my aunts house with nothing else to do but jump in the pool.

It has deteriorated since then, but I want to build it up again. (Pooldiving, no oceans near kentucky).

So is there anyone on here with any experience that can offer me any advice, training etc?

PS: If you dont know what it is (and you are too silly to figure it out from my post), then get "the Big blue" - its a good movie. 1988

Have you tried asking your buddy Google yet?:P

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=freediving+FAQ&btnG=Google+Search

That's the first search string I tried and it seems to have pulled up some useful info.

Good luck with this, freediving is pretty badass and required a lot of stamina and skill. Once you get that mastered then maybe you can move away and dive for pearls all year long.:P

It would be very cool if there were some Freedivers here and they could chat about their experiences. I find the sport very facinating, although its not something that I want to personally partake in.:)

Why not? Ever since I was a kid (grew up with a pool) I loved being underwater. I guess that helped me a lot in having the capacity that I do now. (which is better than most, but not great)

Just lying on the bottom of the pool watching the surface from the other end is AWESOME. just lie there. I can't wait to jump in and swim with fish in the reef and all that. One day...

One question for anyone....
When I was a kid, water up the node never bothered me. It never hurt. Now, I roll my kayak and it hurts more and more. Is there a way to remedy this without wearing goofy/annoying noseplugs? What allowed me to make them not hurt when I was a kid?

The same thing happens when I am upside down in the pool (practicing my head down for instance):D

Great movie.
My longest times in 1993 were always in the 4minute.21 second range but at depth that ALL changes.
I wouldn't even qualify at a small competition.
They can go 7 mins at depth.
Just be careful as you should already know that you MUST hyperventilate before going under for higher oxygen build up, you can pass uot after getting into any depth. I was at Grand Caymen for Scuba when a freediver died from passing out at depth.

Hey bertusgeert....
Springfield- OR or Il.?

I have free dove a few times, but I prefer SCUBA.
During the summer I freedive some of the more popular swimming spots in the Mckenzie, and various resivors and such when it is too shallow to merit suiting up with SCUBA.

If your in Oregon, I'd take you out this summer.
By then I will have my Divemaster, right now Rescue diver is my cert.

ALSO, for anybody reading this posts
Hyperventilating before freediving is what CAN cause you to pass out under water.... This is because hyperventilating puts more o2 in your blood, but when your carbon dioxide levels reach a certain level you'll pass out. By hyperventilating you can actually pass out before you think you need to breath.

While freediving hyperventilate no more than 3 breaths.

Disclaimer... take this info as any other on the web... most of you don't know my credibility for statements so talk to a professional localy before doing any diving activities... If you are in Oregon PM me and I'll point you in the right directions:)

I am a free diver. I am heading to Belize this weekend for the Boogie down there. When I am not jumping I will be spear fishing. The reason I got into freediving was because it is illegal to spearfish in Belize SCUBA diving. Here in Texas you can go offshore and shoot fish SCUBA diving. It makes it way more of a sport trying to shoot fish on one breath. Most of the depths that I shoot fish down in Belize are depths of 25-35 feet. I would Highly recommend it to anyone.

You dont't get to choose how you're going to die. Or when.......You can only decide how you're going to live........NOW.

I spent seven years in the Caribbean. stopped counting @ 2500+ dives. Been everywhere theer - every wreck ( I think) and island for the most part. Freediving is a process of developing your body to reach it's limits of anaerobic fitness. The abscence of O2. It took me about five months to train to sixty feet for 2 minutes. that's with no weights and no wetsuit. just fins and a mask.
It is dangerous and should be done with a buddy who knows revival techniques. If you believe that people are regualrly doing seven minutes, you are watching the big blue too much. Pepin was a freak. The top females can do 120 feet at about 2.5 minutes. maybe 3. now, weighted dives (unlimited) is a different story.
I don't think you should spear, but that's my own moral code. too many idiots doing it. it is finite resource, right? That said, the fish ( like with rebreathers) will let you get closer than with all those bubbles.
This all stems from the mammalian dive response. It flows from the lower levels (reptilian part) of the human brain stem. You can trigger it by splashing water on your face prior to getting in any water...it's a weird thing left over from the old days. We did some cool things as SCUBA instructors (think 150+ people per day on their first dives. in the ocean. off a beach. eight people in your group for a 30 minute dive. four times per DAY. iT WAS VERY DIFFICULT AND FUN. The busiest in the world (that sadly is no more.)We would, for fun, swim out a quarter mile, no fins (well, one set for eight of us) and take turns racing to the 60' bottom. just pass the fins and mask around and see who was quickest. Aahhh.good times. Be careful. have fun. No spearing, just looking, IMO...RD;)
