Where not to park at the dropzone

Recommended Posts

Having no money to jump but wanting to hang out with cool people this weekend, I drove out to the dropzone Saturday afternoon. When I arrived the main parking area was full so I parked along the landing area, behind a black SUV.

*First warning bell - there were NO skydiving related stickers on the vehicle.*

Off to the hangar I went, where I happily spent the next two hours chatting, eating chips and salsa and watching people pack. It was shortly before the sunset load when I was informed that someone had taken out the mirror on the driver's side of my car. Dismayed, I walked out to find the mirror sitting on the hood and the left front fender crinkled/slightly misshapen/no longer smooth and aerodynamic, with telltale paint fragments still attached. What color paint fragments? Guess.

What I didn't find was a note, or any indication of who was responsible for this grievous injury to my formerly mostly straight conveyance.

Needless to say, the Bytch was not happy.

After whining about it to a few people - okay, to damn near every person on the dropzone - I figured out that the black SUV formerly parked in front of me was most likely driven by a 20-ish year old hotel bellman who'd brought his girlfriend out to do tandems for her 18th birthday. Somehow within the next 30 minutes or so I'd managed to get ahold of their names, phone numbers and addresses... but no vehicle information beyond what I remembered - a black SUV. I then proceeded to drink beer as I was far too pissed off to even consider using any of the information I'd gathered.

I got a ride home because it was dark, I'd been drinking and I didn't want to risk driving the car without the driver's side mirror under those circumstances. Drove it home Sunday morning without incident and spent the morning MacGyvering the mirror back onto the car (MacGyvering - solving a problem using only materials at hand; in this case firewood, a couple screws, a couple nuts and some duct tape).

I've been tempted several times over the past few days to a) make threatening phone calls to the punk kid who damaged my car, b) drive to the address I have looking for the black SUV then damaging it further when I find it and/or c) going on a homicidal rampage against the punk ass kid that drove off after damaging my car. So far I've done none of the above and it's likely that none of the above will ever occur.

This experience solidifies my feelings that tandem skydiving is being marketed to the wrong people. Anyone who would damage someone else's property and run off is NOT responsible for their own actions and therefore should NOT be allowed, much less encouraged, much less even have the opportunity, to jump out of an airplane.

The lesson I'd like all of us to take away from my bad luck, and thus the reason behind this post...

DON'T PARK ANYWHERE NEAR THE TANDEMS!

Better yet, is it a Class B mis in CA to leave the scene of an accident? You can totally fuck his world and he could very well loose his job as well as have a lot of fines and have to repair your car if you simply make a report with the cops and give them the information you have.B|

Why don't you take some action on this? If you have his name, call him and tell him that you are going to file a claim.

Call the cops. It's a hit and run. Give them your information.

I doubt the punk ass kid has insurance and I only carry PL&PD, and I doubt the cops will do anything considering a) I don't have a license plate number and b) the incident happened in Davis and the punk ass kid lives in Sac.

Lisa,

Since I've had many years in the hotel industry, I've had a lot of experience with hiring and firing bellman or valets. Usually bellman and valets are the same department. If he also valets at the hotel than it is usually required that he have a clean license. They sign a consent allowing hotel management to retrieve their driving record. You just may have the punk by the balls. That is if he cares whether or not he loses his job. I think you have quite a few options here. The goal is to get the prick to pay for the repairs to your car.

Good luck,
Chris

I would go get pictures of his SUV before he can get it repainted....

That'd require driving about 60 miles round trip. Right now I can just about afford the gas to get myself to and from work until next payday...

PM me your address and I'll send you $20 for gas to make the trip. Just don't sell my hammer for crack - I still want it back.

Don't we have any DZ.commers in the SAC area that can do a drive by photo shoot?

Right. Try realistic enough to not want to waste time and money when I already know what the outcome will be whether I waste the time and money or not.

Yes, I'm whining. I think if you'd lost as much as I have in the past year you'd be whining too.

I'd contact the police dept. or Sheriff's dept. for the area the DZ is located and give them all the information you have in regard to the accident. If, the driver of the SUV is still making payments on the vehicle, he should have insurance through the bank he's making payments to. The sooner... the better.

I have to agree with this post. You have a very good idea who drives the SUV. Give the police dept. the info, explain what happened. This won't cost you any money. Maybe take up some time. Plus you're not doing anything about fixing your ride whining here on dz.com. You've gotten some really good advice, quit your bitching and do something about it. Or just sit in your puddle of "poor me" and cry about how horrible the world is.

Personally, I'd drive the 60 miles round trip just to pop the fuck in the nose, then get his insurance info. No insurance? Bust a kneecap. B|

While not quite as harsh as Slappie ;) I agree with this.

This has nothing to do with marketing to irresponsible people (for pete's sakes have you met many skydivers?). It is simply a sad commentary on personal responsibility in our society. The same thing could happen in any parking lot. The difference then is that you would not have any of the information you do now. So, appreciate that it happened on your turf, and act on the information while they can still analyze the paint, etc. You have very justifiable reason to contact law enforcement.

Just as an aside, I park a bit seperately at the dz, cause I dont trust the drunken skydivers ;)

Dang it, hope they catch the little thug. >:(

It still drives well though, yes? Glad for that.

I really wasn't trying to be harsh to bytch. It just came out that way I guess. :)
