NWFlyer 2 #26 February 2, 2005 QuoteSpecial occasion wines...try finding a 100-point first or super-second for less. In any case, I usually stay well under that, with most of my "high-ends" being in the $50-$80 range (except the occasional Opus or Caymus SS). Last year I got a couple bottles of Leonetti's, a couple more of Woodward Canyon "old vines", and a half-case of Quilceda Creek cab. Everything else was under $50 (retail, I don't count restaurant prices), and the bulk was under $30. Spoken like a guy who lives out in wine country. Sounds like I gotta start angling for a dinner invite to Dave's! Hey, Dave... how *you* doin? "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. livendive 8 #28 February 2, 2005 QuoteSpoken like a guy who lives out in wine country. It's getting a little crazy over here. The last real "date" I went on was with a winemaker, to the wedding of a vineyard owner, that was attended almost exclusively by winery owners. The cool thing was it was at a restaurant, and the entire ceremony was: "Do you take her to be your lawfully wedded wife?" "Sure" Do you take him to be your lawfully wedded husband?" "I do" "Give her the ring" ... "Kiss her" ... "I now pronounce you husband and wife...let's drink." QuoteSounds like I gotta start angling for a dinner invite to Dave's! Dinner invites at my place are pretty easy to come by. If you're at the DZ and want to have dinner, we're probably on. You might however want to wait till after I get a cellar in my new house and my ex & I divide up our collection. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Definitely hope to make it out that way this spring when it's soggy here and a little warmer (and definitely sunnier) over there. livendive 8 #38 February 2, 2005 QuoteHmm.... when's spring barrel tasting this year? In the spring? April 22-24 in Yakima Valley/Red Mountain. Confirmed participants include: Sagelands, Tefft, Snoqualmie, Kestrel, C.R. Sandidge, Thurston Wolfe, Willow Crest, Oakwood, Portteus, and Hedges. My experience suggests several others will get on board, some good, some not so good. Expect to see Hogue (head winemaker is skydiver Dave Forsythe), Tucker (wine SUCKS, but Anthony's Homeport is always outside serving lunch), Sandhill, Apex, Buckmaster, Horizon's Edge, Seth Ryan, Terra Blanca, Gordon Brothers, Barnard Griffin, Bookwalter, and more. Those last 3 are less than 5 miles from my house & the DZ, and many of the others are ~10 miles away. May 7-8 in Walla Walla valley. Fewer wineries, but better average quality of wine. Nobody listed yet, but expect to see K, Waterbrook, Three Rivers, L'Ecole, Reininger, Walla Walla Vintners, Woodward Canyon, and more. Both are obviously more fun with a bunch of friends, in a big rental (limo or van), with a hired (sober) driver. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" NWFlyer 2 #40 February 2, 2005 QuoteIn the spring? Sigh. QuoteExpect to see Hogue (head winemaker is skydiver Dave Forsythe) Nice... I'd go there just for that, but I also remember liking their wine last time I was out there for barrel tasting (sadly, I think it was 2000, far too long in my book). QuoteTucker (wine SUCKS, but Anthony's Homeport is always outside serving lunch) Yup, remember that, too. But I can go to Anthony's any time I want since I live on the right side of the mountains. QuoteApex I could wax rhapsodic for hours about the 1996 Apex Chardonnay (and I'm not even a chardonnay fan). Wish I'd bought more than 2 bottles. QuoteThose last 3 are less than 5 miles from my house You accepting reservations yet? Quotethe DZ, and many of the others are ~10 miles away. Wine and skydiving. livendive 8 #43 February 3, 2005 QuoteI can go to Anthony's any time I want since I live on the right side of the mountains. We just got an Anthony's last fall. Great location, nice building, decent eats, but not good enough to justify their prices. Unfortunately it's about as close as we get to fine dining in the Tri-Cities. The closest truly great food, a little tiny French restaurant, is about 70 miles away in the tiny town of Dayton. Best restaurant in eastern Washington, bar none. QuoteI could wax rhapsodic for hours about the 1996 Apex Chardonnay (and I'm not even a chardonnay fan). Wish I'd bought more than 2 bottles. Apex has been making consistently good wines for several years now. Unfortunately, their new labeling and pricing makes me think they've been bought out by one of the big conglomerates (Chalone or Stimson), so I expect the quality of their wines will go downhill fairly quickly. QuoteYou accepting reservations yet? Name the weekend. I'm a somewhat regular host to visiting jumpers. QuoteOf course. The driver is key. As long as it isn't me. NOT IT! NWFlyer 2 #44 February 3, 2005 QuoteName the weekend. I'm a somewhat regular host to visiting jumpers. Score! Ditto if you find yourself on this side of the mountains in search of some for-real fine dining. Hint: it ain't gonna be Anthony's. Okay, I think I'm done threadjacking. Yes, yes, there *are* lots of pinot varieties out there. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. happythoughts 0 #45 February 3, 2005 QuoteThe last three >$150 bottles I've bought have been terrible. The first two I dumped, the third got set aside while we drank a couple decent bottles, then guzzled just on principle. Guzzled $150 of wine? How do you guzzle a 55-gallon drum?
