Interesting stat for those on the job hunt

Recommended Posts

I spent the entire morning and better part of the afternoon at one of the Illinois Unemployment Offices giving a presentation to a variety of unemployed people and representatives from social work organizations.

The biggest complaint in the room was "I can't find a job." I delved into job searching methods and it was obvious that most people were just searching on the internet and sending out emails.

It was at that point that someone from the Illinois Department of Employment Security stood up and handed out this statistic: Only 4% of displaced workers are directly getting a job from responding to an internet job posting.

What does this mean for those living off Top Ramen at home? Expand your network!!

One of the best jobs I even landed (actually the job that “launched” my career) I landed by walking in the front door and asking for it. I was actually at the company installing some vinyl lettering for them and have been working on computers ever since.

Moving to Byron is a great way to advance your career. It was one step in my progress to becoming a full-time, professional skydiver.
Besides, Byron is a nice place to jump and the people are friendly.
A month after I moved to Byron - in 1992 - I got a call offering me two jobs in California City, eventually three jobs. Life steadily improved after I moved to Byron.

This came across my desk this morning from a career coach...looks like this is where that stat came from:

"Richard Bolles, author of What Color is Your Parachute, the #1 job hunting book in the world for the past 30 years, says that only 4% of job seekers find their jobs through internet job postings and only 7% find their jobs by sending out resumes alone. Yet this is where most job seekers spend the majority of their time.

Therefore the best way to get a job is through networking.

What type of job do you want? You need to be clear about what you want and then put together a plan to get it. The more specific you are the more targeted and effective you can make you job search campaign and the easier it will be for other people to help you.

I didn't say it would be easy. Many people have difficulty identifying their ideal job. They don't want to rule out any possibilities. They claim they can be all things to all people. Or, they feel desperate so they claim they will take anything. The truth is the more clear you are about what you want, the easier it will come to you (and never sound desperate). You will be able to focus all of your energy on achieving it rather than spreading out your efforts, ineffectively. Many people dread the "N" word - Networking. They are fearful about approaching their contacts and expanding their networks, and often it isn't effective for them because they aren't able to clearly articulate the help they need."
