Chiropractor

Recommended Posts

I've put off going to a chiropractor for years. Like, my whole life. In my life, I've experienced lots of "trauma" to the body, many broken bones, many falls, car accidents and whatnot. Considering that I competed in gymnastics, figure skating, am a black belt, and a skydiver, I've been throwing my body around for my whole life....but I can't stand chiropractors.

I received a gift certificate for 3 adjustment sessions followed by a massage (basically a month's worth of hour sessions from the Inner Sight Center) from a colleague because while I love my job, I get seriously stressed with it, and he had caused me great stress numerous times. It was a sweet Christmas present, but I didn't think I'd use it. For no real reason, I called this week and made an appointment...

Today was the first session. I got a spinal adjustment, a neck adjustment, and a pelvic adjustment. I kid you not, I was cracking and popping all over. And what was really funny was that it didn't hurt at all, and that I felt tingling in my jaws right after the neck one. She explained that my neck was locked and what I was feeling was nerves finally getting the stimulus they needed (I tend to clench my jaws while I sleep...), and that she suspected that the jaw clenching would lessen over the next few weeks.

The oddest part? I actually enjoyed it. I thought that was the weirdest part of all - I usually can't stand someone messing with my back - I don't even like massages. But I feel really good now...

Just thought I'd share. :)

It feels good to do something for myself every once in a while.

A problem I see with chiropractic is that most people can't just go 'every once in awhile'...they have you come back over and over and over....

Alysse and I both went to chiropractors last year for different reasons.....they caused lots of pain, some temporary release, then we went elsewhere.

I have tried a variety of physical therapies. Massage and related bodywork can relax the body so the BODY itself releases the tension and that will be more effective in the long run..

You will find mixed thoughts concerning chiropractors. If you have a good one, you shouldn't hurt after an adjustment, or they shouldn't cause you any more pain. He brought me such relief after having a back injury and especially after a car accident I was in. The biggest plus is relief from my headaches, which I have had 'forever' and never knew why. There is a new chiropractor in the office now, who is also a massage therapist and he knew exactly where my headaches originate, and used a pressure point to the spot of origin. If seeing a chiropractor makes you feel better, then go for it. It definintely has made an improvement for me.:)
It is amazing how good you feel after an adjustment!

From what I've seen/experienced with chiropractors, there are two types: "hard" and "soft" adjustors. (knock it off, ya pervs... LOL)

Please note: I am not in the medical field, this is just my personal experience and observations.

A hard chiropractor is like an osteopath - they twist you up like a pretzel and force the vertebrae to adjust. This can be good for things like relieving a pinched nerve, if you can stand the pain.

A soft chiropractor will use varios methods (ultrasound, infrared, massage) to relax the muscles first, then do the adjustments.

A soft chiropractor can literally press on a muscle, then release it and get the vertebra to release. This is very good for general back health and/or things that you have to be seen for over a long term...

Agree to some extent... there is a varied view between manipulators regarding the "manual medicine." Some like the "popping and cracking" cuz it makes them feel that something "real" was done. Others focus on the muscle energy and strengthening/stretching for relief.
Osteopathic Dr.s are taught both types of techiniques (plus others). The ones they perfer to use, though, depends on their mindset/personality. I honestly don't use manipulation in my field... but I do help out friends and family. I prefer to start with the soft (massage, relaxing the tight muscles), then once the resistance is gone (and IF the person is wanting it) move to the harder (called HVLA - high velocity, low amplitute forces) I personally think that the muscle stuffs is FAR more important than the "adjusting"... pluse the person-person contact is so important. We don't really touch each other as much as we should anymore.... (and no, I don't mean to refer back to the sex on the dz thread) But part my reason for my techinque is cuz it's for friends and I don't care if I'm spending 10min or 30min doing it. If your charging for it, then they have to take in how many patients are scheduled, what is cost-effective, what will make the pts. come back.... business type stuffs.

I never had a reason to go to a chiropractor until I had so many skydiving incidents happen! It works well for me because he does stuff before the manipulation including heat, ice, electric stim and ultrasound, whatever is needed for that particular injury. I would be cautious going to just any chiropractor because of the reputation their industry has, but mine is a family friend and I know he'll treat me right.

Good on you, Michele, for taking care of yourself. I hope it makes you feel better!

You sound like you are ready for Friday.

:)
Marc, I understand that aspect, but at the moment, I am going gratis because of the gift certificate...we shall see how I feel after the month is over, and I'll make my decision about going back then. And I gotta say, I've put my body through enough in mjy life that I know I'm not going to get "fixed" quickly - too many years of damage to undo in one session...so we'll see. All I know right now is that it felt great, and I will go again.

I am really looking forward to it, Sparky. I so need to get into the air. Recent life has been a challenge...and I need a break! LOL!

Jan, it is amazing how good one feels after. I thought I'd hurt, or be sore or stiff, but I'm not at all.

Mike, the chiropractor is all of 95 lbs soaking wet. She can't bend me like a pretzel, so I guess she's a softie. LOL, but she got my back cracking and my neck popped, and it didn't hurt at all...'twas interesting in a clinical sense, and a great experience in a physical sense.

Kbordon, interesting reading...I don't know the least bit about chiropractic or massage stuff, but I can't wait to learn more. And just to note, I'm one of those "touchy feely" people, and I make sure I get at least 5 hugs a day from people around me. I know the importance of touch, and both give and receive it as much as possible.

Andi, it's been so hard to just do something for myself like that. And it does indeed feel good to pay attention to me. Sometimes, one just needs to put self above others, even if it's just for an hour.
