flyangel2 2 #3 February 4, 2005 Darn it old man, do I need to come over there and show you how to work your computer?May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. freeflir29 0 #5 February 4, 2005 zeeb.at/oops/B-52crash2.jpg Lots of great pics on that page. Crazy enough.........I was standing about a half mile away across the flight line over by the main hangar smoking when this happened. You can see the copilot's ejection hatch leaving the aircraft in this pic. It's a slow ejection system though........he didn't make it. Dumb ass pilot tricks......... zeeb.at/oops/Oh%20Shit.jpg That one isn't an Oh shit either. They do that on purpose. I once heard a very funny story from an ALO about getting in a SHIT LOAD of trouble at a Canadian air show. They wanted to impress all the other military aviators there so they pulled a "Zippo Trick." Just like in this pic.........they dump a bunch of fuel and then hit the afterburner. Well....they did this just a few feet off the runway. Caught all the rubber on it on fire. Oops.........
bob.dino 1 #6 February 4, 2005 So is the vapour coming from leading edge of the wing related to this, or just 'coz it's dark and humid?

slug 1 #8 February 4, 2005 Hi Clay B-52 Looks like the one at fairchild AFB maybe 12-15 yr's ago when they were doing a low level flyby formation demo? Some people from my office were on the ramp watching the show. Remember reading about that one A lot of people didn't like flying with the pilot anywhere, anytime, anyhow R.I.P. Happened in the summer of 1994 I think. While I have no firsthand knowledge, I remember seeing and reading plenty about that one. I think the pilot had been chewed out a number of times for hot dogging. Maybe you can clarify. I heard that the structure in the background was an ammo supply, and the pilot was strictly forbidden from flying over it, since he'd been chewed out for flying over it before. Some speculate that, asshole that he was, he figured he'd make an extreme maneuver to avoid it. Kind of like saying, "Well, sir, I had to do that maneuver because I can't fly over the ammo supply." Any veracity to that? My wife is hotter than your wife.
freeflir29 0 #12 February 4, 2005 I believe the building right behind the aircraft is part of the survival school. You can also see some fences with cameras all over them. The fences ARE part of the weapons storage area. Not sure about over flight of that. I do know that he was in a landing config (Aircraft "dirty" flaps and gear down.) He was executing a go around because a tanker had not cleared the active. He was at full power (Which isn't saying a whole lot on a B-52) and made a hard left turn. The inside wing stalled and the aircraft went into basically a "No lift" situation where the wings were perpendicular to the ground. Now.......he was at low altitude, slow, and trying to recover with full right input. B-52's fly with "Spoilers" instead of ailerons. Basically they cause more drag on one side to cause a turn. Which.......just really made this problem worse. Long story short.....he found himself in an unrecoverable position. There was NOTHING left of the aircraft except the right horizontal stab sticking up out of the smoking hole. Aircraft number 1026. I had worked on it MANY times. At least he didn't land on the nukes.
