Free connection is it ethical

Recommended Posts

I am not one to normally use an open connection, but when my connection goes down, I have used them before. Now I wont download a ton of huge stuff, I only check my email and dz.com when that happens, nothing streaming like. Keeping the bandwidth use to a minimum. Also note that the connection it probally within 300 feet or so, most likely there is a chance you know the person that you are using their connect. Note: My neighbors are cool with it as long as I: don't download a ton of huge stuff, and mainly check email and some surfing.

Try telling this to my wife, who works for Time Warner and their Roadrunner broadband service. Stealing someone else's bandwidth is theft, plain and simple. And it could put my wife out of a job.

Billvon, remind me to hide the valuables if you ever stop by my house.;)

Ofcourse, not ALL providers say this is illegal.. Infact Speakeasy DSL actually tells you how to share your internet to the world on their website... There are alot of networks that *ARE* setup to allow people to connect, on purpose... I used to keep mine open too... I also will use someone elses connection if mine is down for any reason (happened a couple of times)... I dont think there is anything wrong with using a shared network, if you spend *ANY* time looking at what your doing it's not hard to lock it down..

Nonsense! There are plenty of places around with open networks that have no problem with you using them. Using them is no more a crime than using a water fountain without first getting written permission.

Well, hey, if you buy a TDMA phone you could put _me_ out of a job - but it's still your right to do so.

>Billvon, remind me to hide the valuables if you ever stop by my house.

And all the women and beer!

Nothing wrong with connecting to an open site; they are often left open for just that purpose. It is trivial for the site owner to disallow access to other people, so they can easily prevent other people from connecting if they so choose.

It's like a neighbor's radio sitting there playing on his deck. Nothing wrong with listening to his radio in your backyard. If he doesn't want you to listen to it he can take it inside.

Most people have no idea how to change any of the settings on their wireless access points and if they did would not understand what they are doing. I have had to set up wireless for quite a few of these clueless people.

It took me all of 5 minutes to explain to one of the people in my office how to secure their home network. They completed the task in less than 30 minutes on their own that night.

If its open its fair game. To me at least is implied permission to connect if there is no security set up. My network has no wep key and broadcasts the SSID. I just don't care.

In my opinion it is only unethical if you start trying to listen in on data or hack secured connections

That doesn't make it right or ethical.
