PhreeZone 20 #1 February 10, 2005 Alright... I've finally caught up to the times and started doing some blogging. I tried it YEARS ago before any of the new blogging software was out and it just was too hard to keep updating static pages every day. I droped away from webpag design for the most part due to lack of time. I was looking at doing a Content Management thing for the freefly group at the DZ and saw most of them including blogging as a major component. Recently I started reading about more and more blogs and how companies were actually buying up communities of bloggers. Also the whole Information Week article on "Who owns Blogs" got me interested in them again. Who here has a Blog and where do you Blog at? For those of you running your own server and blogging software what do you use? I tried WordPress but found it to be WAY too hard to customize out. I'm using Pivot now, but would like something SQL based in the end.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

PhreeZone 20 #4 February 10, 2005 Not really. I'm looking more for a server side install. Not piggybacking on top of LJ (funny as hell about their outage. I've about seen similar things at other data centers.) or Blogger.com. I do like the feel and tools that LJ gives you to use, but I want to build an entire site with the blog maintaining the look and feel that the rest of the site has. Its realy hard to do that when you are not in control of the layout or design. Open Source tools are clearly perfered since I can play with the code. Did I hear right that LiveJournal got bought up recently?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
wildblue 7 #5 February 10, 2005 If you didn't like WordPress, you probably won't like any of the open source stuff. Take a look at Moveable Typeit's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
PhreeZone 20 #6 February 10, 2005 Blah... that costs money What I really disliked about WordPress is that it was'nt that dependent on single CSS temples or even a few central ones. It would have been far easier to just edit the php for things. That or else I was looking in the wrong files for the style changes. I can have WordPress installed at anytime, but I'm stuck on how to customize it. I like Pivot now since its controlled by 2 CSS tables and 3 PHP files and that controls eveything. Granted its got very limited functionality...Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

indyz 1 #8 February 10, 2005 Of the free stuff, WordPress is the best there is. Best docs, best plugins, easiest install, easiest customization (this is strongly related to "best docs"). Edit to add: Wordpress has one stylesheet, and only two pages to customize (index and comments).
PhreeZone 20 #9 February 10, 2005 If I had the time to write that much code I would'nt be looking for an easy option I have'nt touched Perl in 4+ years. I can't even define a variable anymore. Thats a major issue. My skills in PhP remind people of a first grader learning the language. Basically I guess am I doing something wrong in Wordpress, or is it really that hard to mod and add things like your own NavBar, ads, etc? Or is there another easy to customize, yet optimized piece of software out there for blogging?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
NWFlyer 2 #10 February 10, 2005 Blogger's pretty easy to customize/templatize/embed in your own site, from what I understand. I use blogger (linked from my site, in my sig/profile), and am pretty clueless but have still managed to do quite a bit of customization."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
