I'm getting fed up with the Fed

This story is hypothetical but based on truths. Dog sniffing may lead to packet sniffing If you know anything about the internet, our privacy may have just gotten a big knock in the balls.

Quote

The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is supposed to be the one that protects people and their "houses, places and effects" against "unreasonable searches." Forty-two years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court held that attaching a listening device to a public pay phone violated this provision because the Constitution protects people, not places, and because the Fourth Amendment prohibits warrantless searches without probable cause if the target enjoys a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Last month the U.S. Supreme Court effectively decimated this principle in a case that could have a profound impact on privacy rights online.

The case, decided by the court on January 24th, had nothing to do with the Information Superhighway, but rather an ordinary interstate highway in Illinois. Roy Caballes was pulled over by the Illinois State Police for speeding. While one officer was writing him a ticket, another officer in another patrol car came by with a drug sniffing dog.

Read the story if you wish, it explains what it could and possible mean to the intra-web as it's called.

Well it was limited to TCP/IP sniffing and headers. Not to the actuall content unless the headers gave them reasons to believe the email or transmission was illegal in it's content.

Now they can basically, setup sniffers and sniff all the packets they want. Basically filter all the traffic they wish without probable cause.

That article said that those doing nothing wrong will not even know it. It is the person committing a crime that will. Can you point to the part about filtering?

Nevermind, i got it. But that means Carnivore will FILTER their finds. I thought you meant a filter of what gets to us.

I could care less. If I am doing no crime, whatever.

If you drive around breaking traffic laws while you have
illegal drugs in your car, you are a moron and deserve to have
them randomly stroll by with a drug sniffing dog ;)

You didn't read the article please step away from the thread until you grasp what the conversation is about.

I may not be a terrorist but I sometimes traffic in pirated or altered programs. Gaming files, *gasp* music.. This is leading right into RIAA MPAA etc's hands. Goverment agencies not even connected to the Homeland Security Dept. Could conseviably sniff my traffic and decided they want to sieze my computer.

I thought they ruled Carnivore as illegal?

No the Feds decided they weren't going to use it and said they're looking into a more economical "off the self" program. Carnivore is active and will be. Don't let the smoke screen lull you into a sense of security.

Well that was one huge assumption on your part slappy, and you were wrong. I know exactly what its about. I was merely amused by the content of the post and commented on it.
Please note that I'm a Sr. UNIX and Network admin professionally and that this topic is WELL known to me.

Thanks for the blistering (and incorrect) chastisement.

Well I will tell you, if I TRULY cared about privacy and had something to hide, I would not be posting here or buying ANYTHING off the internet, or using the internet at all.

No my actual comments were based on what you said about the drugs and the dog. The threads ideal was nothing to do with drugs nor drug sniffing dogs.

So don't whine, you got smacked.. deal with it. jeez :D

A quote from the exact text of the post...

I commented on an amusing part of what was posted. If you have issues with that, I'm sorry.
It certainly doesnt mean I was unaware of the "spirit" of the post.

Yes but the true topic of the thread was buried deeper. I don't always post what I'm refering to on the surface. I sometimes want a true discussion with intelligent content. Not just boobies an sex all the time.

If you would have dug deeper into the content of my post. efore you assumed I was complaing about drugs and some unfortunate drug courier. Who's whining and loosing in court about the unlawful use of a drug dog. You were mistaken.

Granted that's a way to look at it. I don't look at it that way. The internet isn't or wasn't constructed just in the US. It's a global community. Where can the US goverment come off and just randomly start checking the content of the information I'm seeing or sending within this global community. IN ways the Supreme Court deemed against the constitution.

*sigh* :S

I knew from the very first post that it was about internet privacy, Slappy.

You are laboring under false assumptions.

I am guilty of highjacking, though, which lead to your assumption. For that I apologise.

No worries KrisL :D

Back to the thread..

I am usually not this touchy. I do take care to normally spell peoples usernames the way they have them listed in the forums. I don't change them because they've got their reasons for spelling them the way they do. They're not always gramaticly correct nor spelt correctly. I don't "fix" them for them...

I spelt your username KrisL because you spelt Slappie "slappy" a number of times. It agitated me.

Sum-Bitch I need a beer this evening!
