elizfowler 0 #1 February 15, 2005 Is it just me or is there really no such thing as "discount Rx's" in any of the chain stores or online pharmacies for people not covered by a plan? Much to my displeasure I found out last year that I am allergic to a few things that I wasn't years ago and have asthma. That said, I have been given Dr's prescription for ADVAIR and Singulair that I am trying to find the most competitive pricing for. I have looked and looked online for some source within the USA that has better than full retail prices but have been coming up blank. Seems apparent why so many people have begun to purchase such things from Canada which should be making the US pharmacies stop their price gouging! Questions to all..... Do you have to use or know someone who does these medications? Where do they get them filled? Have you ever filled a Rx online and if so was it within the USA or Canada? I need HELP! From my personal experience (I work for a major pharmaceutical retailer) it's not the pharmacies that make the cost of drugs so expensive, it's the manufacturers. I've seen the markup on most of the drugs we sell, and it's really not much at all.
complexity 0 #4 February 15, 2005 It is really difficult to find comparative information on Rx prices in the US because for the most part people don't care as their insurance covers most of the costs except for copays/coinsurance. And its the insurance companies that are getting the discounts for you through volume purchasing and rebates. If you don't have insurance, my advice is for you to go online to the different pharmacy chains, or even ask them, to see what the prices are that they charge. Plus ask if you can purchase a drug discount card. In addition, pharmaceutical benefit managers like Medco, Express Scripts, and Caremark also have discount cards you can purchase so you can get lower prices. Often though you have to be of a certain income because its for people that cannot afford health insurance. It really is a pity because if people had more information on drug prices they could do more comparison shopping. But for the most part, most people don't care as they have their insurance paying for the bulk of it. And its those that aren't covered that pay the most.
