How honest should I be?

Yesterday I made a debit purchase at Walmart for $70. When I ran my card, there was a weird beep and I can't remember what the screen said, but it was something I didn't recognize. I asked the checkout girl what what was up and she didn't know as it was her first day. The purchase was approved, i signed my reciept and was on my way. Today I was looking at my account online and noticed that the $70 was taken from my account and the credited right back. Wanting to do the right thing, I called the Walmart and was transferred to accounting. After explaining my situation I was put on hold and then cut off. I called back and they when the woman I talked to looked into it, she said everything was fine. I explained to her that I had $70 worth of groceries that I didn't pay for, she gave me a near unintelligable explaination that made no sense and insisted that I had in fact paid for the groceries. The bottom line is that the money was credited back to my account and I got the groceries for free. Should I persue this further, or have I fulfilled my obligation of being honest?

Hell, you did your part in telling them what happened. It's their problem if they didn't catch or see the error themselves.

But keep the receipt and other documents you accessed handy for future reference in case they do find the error, just to protect yourself. You never know.

it sounds like you bent over backwards to try and correct the situation. I don't know how much more i would do. I think the fact that you called twice and talked to someone is more than 90% of people would do. You sound like a good egg.

Maybe next time you go to Walmart you can tell the manager and explain what happened -- keep your receipt. And see what the manager says. Also make sure it didn't come out of the new cashier's paycheck? I have no idea how that works...

not that it matters, but I seriously DOUBT Walmart is hurting from it -- jsut matters if it affects the new cashier and your own conscious.

From what you've said, you've done about all you could, to give them their money to pay for the groceries. You might try discussing this with the store manager. If, you get the same results as you did from the lady in accounting, I would say, forget about it. :S

Wait at least a month, until everything flows through, just to make sure you really don't get billed again. Then, try one more time to fix it. Start by telling them that this is the last time you are going to try. It may be cheaper for them to let it go than to spend the time sorting it out.

i like thwat dave thinks cause i am part of a mom and pop computer shop in houma LA and all i can say if ya got some food for free be happy cause you know the owner of walwart isn't worried about 70 dollars

It's Walmart. They could care less. Most likely, though, you'll just charged for it in a day or two as they go through their automatic audits.

But even if they don't. It's Walmart.

As somebody else said, if it was a mom-and-pop store, completely different situation. A chain like Walmart which intentionally tries to run mom-and-pop stores out of business, fuck 'em. Enjoy your free lunch for the day.

Actually, you've gone out of your way to make good. If the retards working there can't figure it out, and probably don't care anyways, why you should you go even more out of your way?

You better try again, when that $70.00 goes missing, they might go belly up.
Of course the ensuing investigation might turn up
all kinds of suspicious billing practices and reveal another Enron type scadal.

if you had to 'sign' your receipt, then you paid with your debit acting as a credit card. The communication between the walmart and the bank just checks for a rating - not even necessarily that you have sufficient funds. You sign the receipt, it appears to debit the amt., then later shows up the same amt. added back to the 'available' amt on the online account view. Wait a few days... it'll be there... happens all the time to me. you can pretty much count on it.

walk away as a gift from wal-mart, its not your fault that those people didnt train their employees. i run a store and at my store if someone messes up....then its on me because i didnt train them right to deal with thesituation the right way...

I agree with others on here; you did what you could, nothing further needed...just don't be surprised if it does come out later. :S

I was once charged by an ice skating rink $730 for ice skates rental. The rental was $3.65, but the idiot at the counter forgot to put the decimal in, and charged $365. Then when they tried to reverse it, the flocking moron charged ANOTHER $365!!!!

I was a little hot about that. >:(
