alanab 0 #1 February 17, 2005 ok, heres the deal. every time i try to install service pac 2 on my dell pc, it disables my usb ports somehow. i cant even use the mouse whewn i do this. so i uninstall it and everything is fine. but wont i need those updates sometime eventually? also... i got a new hp printer/scanner thing. the software that comes with it doesnt work with my computer. i think it would work if i had the service pac 2 however. i have installed and uninstalled that software from 2 different discs more time thani can count and it never works. so i can print, but i cant scan still. what the hell is going on? AggieDave 6 #2 February 17, 2005 Ok, firstly, I don't like SP2...but that's my personal opinion. Secondly, go to HP's website and download new drivers for your scanner/printer thingy.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Slurp56 0 #7 February 17, 2005 After installing SP2 try removing and rescanning for your USB controller in Device Manager. Most controllers use a Microsoft driver, but check with dell and see if there are any driver updates available.________________________________________ I have proof-read this post 500 times, but I guarantee you'll still manage to find a flaw. jkm2500 0 #9 February 17, 2005 by using the hardware device manager, easiest way to find it is start => right click, my computer => prperties => click the tab at the top that says hardware => then click device manager. that would put you into it, or go through the control panel. either way....do you have ps2 ports for keyboard/mouse? if you do use a ps2 mouse to go in and reactivate. if not, use the keyboard to navigate, and reactivate your ports.... freekfly 0 #10 February 17, 2005 Here is the computer geek in me coming out. SP2 is good and bad. Bad because of crap like this. Here is what you do. Prior to installing it again, go to Dell's support site Look at the back of your computer.....bottom side if it's a laptop and get your Service Tag #. It should be 6 or 8 letters and #'s. On that support page, plug in that service tag # and it will bring you to a support page just for that PC. From there.....you're going to want to go to the download drivers section. Depending on the PC, there might even be a special SP2 update area. The drives that you will want are ones like USB and such. You don't need them all. Then, installl SP2......and then update the drivers by running the downloads from Dell...and you should be good to go. If not....shoot me a PM and I can walk ya through some stuff..... -Tech Support aka Brian___________________________ www.brianbuckland.com
Bouda 0 #11 February 17, 2005 only problem with support pages is that they read like vcr instructions and are more complicated than what you are actually doing. Look what i made at work today mom!!
