skydiver30960 0 #1 February 15, 2005 Dammit, I'm bitter... the season will get scrubbed unless there is some sort of Deus ex Machina between now and tomorrow. On the other hand, I'm so unhappy with the owners and players for being such asshats during the whole affair that I'm not too sure I'd be able to watch much of the season if it did come off... Well, one way I look at it is that with the NHL out of the picture the "big league" just stepped down one notch to the AHL/IHL, which means my little beer league games are now one step closer to the top! masterrig 1 #3 February 15, 2005 The BIG problem is, Gary Bettman! Here he is, the head of the NHL and he's done nothing more than screw-up the game. He's pushed the game into parts of this country that don't give two hoots about hockey and don't really support hockey. Then, turns-around and says that team owner losses is due to high wages for players. The players have tried to make fair offers to the league but, Bettman won't hear of them. He, adamantly demands a 'salary cap'. Hell, he has only attended one of the league/player meetings! He's an idiot and has done more to hurt the game than help it. masterrig 1 #5 February 15, 2005 I've always been a fan of the Wings, bitter rivalry there! (when there was hockey) I have to admit, the Avs, have/had probably one of the finest players of the the game today... Peter Forsberg! Sad part is, hockey fans will have to watch minor league teams. There's talk of a 're-birth' of the World Hockey League. The NHL, needs to get rid of Bettman! Chuck

BillyVance 35 #8 February 15, 2005 I would say to hell with all the major pro leagues - NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL. They're all full of millionaire whiney crybabies who get into stupid fights and shoot themselves up with steroids. Force them all to go back to the minor leagues to play for a few hundred grand a year at most, then everybody could afford to go to their games!"Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
PhreeZone 20 #9 February 15, 2005 Well, the players agreed to a 53 mil salery cap. More ten the 40 the owners wanted... but since the players swore there would never be a cap it looks like they caved somewhat. masterrig 1 #10 February 15, 2005 What is ironic Phree is, there are several NHL - players who don't want a salary cap, signing with minor league teams who have... salary caps! Chuck
kingbunky 3 #11 February 15, 2005 here's how to fix hockey: rule 1. you can't have an nhl team unless you can play at least one home game on natural ice. phoenix, miami, orlando, no hockey for you. rule 2. you must have lived in the city who's team you play for for at least 10 years. rule 3. salary cap of $100k per season. that's a nice salary for a game that doesn't require a lot of education. if that isn't enough money for you, go find a real job. if you're really good, you can make more with endorsements. rule 4. cap tickets to the games at about $25 or so, so average people can afford to go."Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." Slappie 9 #16 February 16, 2005 QuoteBoo hiss-a-roo. I miss seeing sexy, angry men get into fights. Does this mean the NHL might be over altogether? Could be strong possibility some teams won't recover from this. It was the Team Owners who locked out the players. Remember that, it's not the players who refused to play. lawrocket 3 #17 February 16, 2005 QuoteIt was the Team Owners who locked out the players. Remember that, it's not the players who refused to play Yes, you are correct. The owners locked the players out. I guess an easier way to look at it was the owners said, "Our labor contract expired. The last one killed us. We need a new contract." To which the player's union responded, "No new contract. You owners are lying. Your doing just fine financially." What's the difference between this and any other business? The owner knows what costs are, and to stay afloat tough choices need to be made. No money means no raises. And the employees become embittered at the greed of the owners. I've fired some people. "Locked them out" so to speak. One was financial - she didn't make enough to make it worthwhile. Hence, she was a financial drain. She wanted to work for us. By the way - after watching the entirety of the press conference, I must admit that I've got a problem with Bettman. The cat doesn't seem to think he ever did anything wrong or could have done anything better. I won't be able to see Goodenow's press conference, but I suspect he'll come out with the same tact as Bettman. Of course, Goodenow sold out the players by proposing a salary cap (which the player's steadfastly refused all along (which, coincidentally, helps make the owner's argument that some salary controls shoudl be necessary because players think it should be unlimited.)) Ultimately, I believe that the league needs to contract by 5-10 teams. I think Bettman needs to go. I think Goodenow needs to go. And I think the players need to understand that maybe some of the franchises ARE in trouble, like Lemieux and Gretzky say they are. Of course, they are in trouble because Bettman is a horse's ass at hockey... My wife is hotter than your wife.
masterrig 1 #18 February 16, 2005 Hear, hear! Bettman is a 'numbers-cruncher', who pushed for League expansion into cities that thought hockey was what was found in a pasture. Team owners were paying outlandish salaries to get 'prime' players (Red Wings - Sergei Fedorov). At one point, the Red Wings paid Fedorov $12mil signing bonus! What kind of message does that send to players? Meanwhile, expansion teams were losing money. Bettman wouldn't back-up on a salary cap. The players, at one point made a fair offer. Bettman turned it down because it did not include the words 'salary cap'. The end result has hurt a lot more people than players or owners. Concession workers at arenas, area hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. Bettman has done more to hurt hockey than anyone. The NHL, needs a new president ...bad! I think, the Pnguins problems was that Lemieux had visions of grandeur that, he alone could carry the team and put fannies in seats. The Coyotes, they're in Arizona. That's not hockey country. Bettman was counting on 'snowbirds' to support teams in Southern states. He's a dufus! Sorry 'bout the rant. Chuck
