Johnny_Cage12 0 #1 May 1, 2009 Hi all, I am guessing I already know the answer but figured I would verify my thoughts with the Family. I am about to buy a helmet and one of the options is a chin cup with cutaway vs no cutaway. Now I expect the response of "it's your life and you decide what it is worth to protect it" so I figure most people will tell me to get a cutaway system. I won't be throwing a camera up there now but would like to sometime in the future. The manufacturer does not retrofit the cutaway system so it is now or never. Do most people who fly with cameras have a cutaway system? Thanks for the help! John
dragon2 2 #2 May 1, 2009 Yes you want a cutaway on a camera helmet, it's smart and it's mandatory in some countries/DZs. ciel bleu, Saskia
skybytch 273 #3 May 1, 2009 Buy a helmet now for the kind of skydiving you do now. When it's time to put a camera on your head, buy a helmet for that. There will be times you'll want to jump without the camera; having a helmet without camera mounts on it will be a good thing. And by the time you're ready to put a camera on your head, there will be at least 2 new camera helmet options on the market. You'll want to have the newest and neatest, right? billvon 3,119 #4 May 1, 2009 Buy a good non-camera helmet without a cutaway system. If you want to get into cameras later, buy a good camera helmet with a cutaway system. They are not interchangeable; it would be like trying to buy a good motorcycle helmet you can also use for skydiving. It doesn't work well.

Think about what she said, obviously your intention is to get a helmet you can later mount a box on with a camera in it, but what about later on when you want to jump with out a camera? Remove the box? What about the cameye/hypeeye? Maybe you will want a ringsight someday..you gonna jump with that without the camera? Do yourself a favor, and wait till you will actually use a camera helmet. I have been in the sport a very short time and I now own an Aviator (open faced), a Mamba (full face) and a FF3 (camera). I use them all at different times. And the only one with a cutaway is the FF3. And as mentioned by the time you are ready to do video new stuff will come out, buy for what you need for jumping today, not in 6 months."Tell ya the truth, I don't think this is a brains kind of operation." Its a bit like buying an FS suit thats a bit too small , because someone plans to lose some weight so it fits fine ergo - not a great plan so buy a helmet for what you need now...
