BTW~ there is a reason most of us old guys carry more than one 'real' hook knife, I bettin' you may have an idea as to why NOW! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

lilchief 1 #6 April 29, 2009 I took a plastic hook knife like yours, and tested it on a HMA line. We were 2 riggers and one skydiver that tried, and no one could cut the 1000lb HMA. It just got stuck in the upper corner and gut approx 40% of the line. One last skydiver managed to cut the line, but only due to repositioning the blade so it sliced more before getting stuck in the upper corner. I really hope that the manufactor would stop selling theese knives due to its poor quality. I'd say it hazardous since people are buying them without knowing that they "won't" work... get a proper metal hook knife, all of you!"Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you long to return." - Da Vinci www.lilchief.no

AggieDave 6 #9 April 29, 2009 QuoteThe orange plasitic hook knife was banned in Sweden a couple of years ago due to poor quality. Over they years, I've literally taken and broken those crappy plastic hook knives from jumpers who refused to give up the one that came with their rig. I then presented them with one of my hook knives, typically a choice between a Jack the Ripper they could sew to their jumpsuit or a nice metal hook knife they could put on their rig. Even then, after easily breaking the hook knife in front of them, some jumpers still said that the hook knife would have been fine (although they were ok accepting my much more expensive hook knife from me).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." mrwrong 0 #10 April 29, 2009 The national S&TA in Sweden told me that those orange pretend knifes actually was being used to gut fish in factories in Norway... I had already gotten rid of mine (yes it came with my rig) and bought the metal one... When I got myself a camera suite I bought a "Jack the Ripper" as a "another primary" knife and I got the knife pocket option on the suite... It just feels better to have a Jack knife when I added the wings, camera and all. It's kind of strange that more people don’t do the same... lilchief 1 #11 April 29, 2009 I gave away one of mine metal knifes to a jumper this Easter. I later lit the thing on fire and laughed as it melted But the test I did took many jumpers by surprise, so I think they got the message...or at least I hope so. sundevil777 102 #12 April 29, 2009 That cheapo orange plastic knife has been known for a long time to be junk. However, there are plastic models that are very good. This plastic knife is great (I have one), unfortunately square one and paragear still sell the orange junk knife also: http://www.square1.com/manufacturers/square1/p1155.asp#4inchPlastichookknifePeople are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. riggerrob 643 #13 April 29, 2009 If you look closely at Square One's catalog, you will also see that they are pushing a dozen different hook knives that they have designed, all better than Zak or Jack knives.

erdnarob 1 #16 April 30, 2009 The hook knife "Jack the Ripper" with its double blade is one of the most efficient and it is made of plastic with metal blades. There is good plastics and cheap ones.Learn from others mistakes, you will never live long enough to make them all.
councilman24 37 #17 May 1, 2009 There are some people that maintain that a single blade knife is best. As I understand it due to jamming between the two blades. The larger benchmade knives are good. The little one is on the ICON IIRC. these are seem like good back up knives. Or to loan to someone without any. For CRW 4th or 5th knive. 5 bucks, more flexable plastic but okay. My teeth are better than the orange plastic zak knife. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
steve1 5 #18 May 4, 2009 Thanks for the info. provided in this thread. I still have one of those little cheap plastic bastards on one of my rigs. It's going in the garbage first chance I get. I have a Jack the Ripper sewn on the leg of my jumpsuit. Sometimes I use a different jump suit though, or I sometimes jump without a jump suit, so I'd like to have another one on my rig too. A hook knife is something I often overlook when I do a safety check.... I'd like to have another small one on my rig. That way I won't be without. Any recommendations on a small knife for that? Where do you stash it? In the old days I had a small hunting knife, next to my chest mount altimeter. Never had to use it, but I felt safer knowing it was there.... matto765 0 #21 May 5, 2009 I just recieved my new Wings container and I'm really happy with the way it came out, except for the fact that they charged me $35 for a hook knife on the mud flap and give me one of the little orange plastic ones. That is absolute bull shit. I can't believe any manufacturer is willing to assume the liability involved with promoting this type of hook knife in the skydiving environment.
