JeepDiver 0 #1 February 24, 2005 John and Jackie Knill of Vancouver, British Columbia, pose at a resort in Khao Lak, Thailand, on December 12, 2004. The couple was killed when the December 26 tsunami struck the resort. Their digital camera was found, and though the camera was destroyed, searchers were able to recover photos of the tsunami from its memory card. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/world/0502/gallery.tsunami.photos/content.1.1.html really very sad. I never venture far offshore during the winter months, even then the sea can become a monster.

I don't know, I've heard stories (and they may just be stories) of people actually walking out to collect shells when the water recedes because of an approaching tsunami. Obviously we all now know the destructive power, but I'm guessing they didn't realize the magnitude of what was happening. The guy was still taking pictures - I doubt he was thinking "Well, I"m about to die but I hope someone finds my camera!" it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
cloudseeker2001 0 #12 February 24, 2005 I see those pics and I cannot help but to think of how stupid those people are. I feel sorry for them, but come on! Ok, you are at the beach and suddenly the water washes away 300 yards and exposes the sand bars and in the distance you see a really damn big surf and I am sure you could probably hear it too! I think a person probably could have gotten away from it in time looking at the first photo-if they ran like hell. I can hear the conversation now.......Ummmmm honey, where did all the water go? It must be a gift from God so that we can collect shells! Yeah, it's so hard to keep pressing the button when there's 20 vertical feet of water rushing at you at 500 miles an hour. It was too late when they took the first picture. It's not like the tsunami waited for the perfect moment then washed ashore. They were probably out taking pictures of the beach when there was one big wave that they happened to catch on film. It reminds me of those photographers who were killed during September 11, a few of them died when the towers fell, the photos recovered from their cameras were amazing and a testment to their final seconds. To call these people "stupid" is to disrespect the dead, I only hope that their death was quick and that they didn't suffer.
