CANNED FROGS HELP THAIS LEAP BACK FROM THE BRINK

The economy of a frog-farming village in Thailand nearly croaked when the price of its plump product slumped on the international market. But they may be leaping back from financial ruin with an innovative product: canned frog.

People in the central Thailand village have long raised muddy brown-coloured, bumpy-skinned frogs for export to Taiwan, where frog legs and frog soup are favourites. But in 2000, the price of live frogs dived. So the residents of Bo Talo invested $15,200 (R90 500) and started producing canned, ready-to-eat frog meat under the Big Frog brand.

:D Ok, the Big Frog brand. I don't care who ya are, that's funny.

The frogs are raised in large cement pools, slaughtered and cleaned, and then deep fried and tossed with two sauces: spicy chilli and sweet and sour. The chopped-up meat can be eaten with rice or as a snack with beer, much as fresh cooked frog is consumed.

Excellent, two flavors. Make a note of that... Chili and sweet/sour.

Also, dining options... mmmm... With rice or as a snack with beer, much as fresh cooked frog is consumed. True, around here, most frog is a snack with a beer. In fact, you need a lot of beer before frogs start looking tasty.

Part of Thailand can't afford houses, but the frogs are living the high life in the cement pond. :D

ugh. i can't imagine eating slimy chewy frog.

It's the " bumpy-skinned" part of the description that bugs me.

I grew up about 1.5 miles from the boat docks. We could get fresh oysters by the bushel box. I like to toss them on the grill until they steam open. Mmmm... :)

Nothing has that "coagulated snot" look like a steamed oyster. :D
