"The Atom Bomb and You"

Recommended Posts

My mother has been collecting some old keepsakes since her father passed away, and she was going through much of it tonight. She showed me old pictures of my uncles and her. She showed me old, sexist cookbooks to try to piss me off. She found my great-grandpa's birth certificate. Then, she showed me a booklet called "The Atom Bomb and You." I thought I would share some excerpts.

"Your chances of surviving an atomic attack are better than you may have thought."

"You won't need an instrument to detect radioactivity. Specialists will do it for you."

"After an air burst, wait a few minutes then go help fight fires."

"To remove radioactive wastes, scrub your body thoroughly."

"Subways and big buildings make good shelters."

I know this is touching that line of "Speakers Corneresque." Yes, we could talk about government propaganda, blah blah blah. I just thought it was interesting.

Proximity is key... the farther you can be away from where it goes off... you can survive the inital blasts.... Fallout... has varying half lives.. but if you stay out of it for a couple weeks the dosages go down enough to allow survival.. but with huge cancer risks later in life.

Insturments are not easy to come by but can be had..... and unless you have the dosimeters or gieger counters you really dont even know its there.

An air burst usually has very high dosages of radiation at the moment of explosion.. but very little fallout.... the main blast area will be devastated but the zone of fires around that will be huge... and if the fires can be mitigated there can be much that is saved for shelter for the survivors if it does not all burn down.

If thre is fallout in the area.. the best thing is to remove any exposed clothing and get any dust or soot from the air off you as quickly as you can. That way there is less radioactive material causing further damage.. all of it helps for you to survive and keeps you from getting a letahal dose.

If you can be sheilded from the initial blast by being in a subway or in the basement of a large building. its your best chance of survival if you are near a targeted area.

Distance is better but it would still be really bad to be in the open 10 miles away from a small weapon than to be in a subway just a couple miles away...

Just a few random thoughts on nuclear survial training from the 70's

True.

Absolutely true, assuming you're a VIP safely housed in a government shelter. Otherwise, you're going to want access to a survey meter (it's fairly easy to make your own rad meter).

After an air burst, get yourself and two weeks of supplies under three feet of dirt or two feet of concrete within an hour.

Well, kind of--They'll provide adequate protection from the fallout, but they won't keep you from catching cholera from the hundreds or thousands of people defecating and dying all around you. Go find shelter away from the masses.

I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names.

Don't tell anyone, but I have a better homes and gardens cookbook from the early 60's..... I use it all the time for pancakes, cookies, and fun stuff like that.

I never said it wasn't true. It's more in the presentation...like, "How to brush your teeth," booklets that we were given in grade school.

Oh...and sorry. If we get a warning of an atomic bomb coming our way...I'm not running into the Sears. :S
