Bolas 5 #1 February 17, 2005 My car was named Captain America by my coworkers. It's an '86 Chevy Spectrum with 225,000 miles on it. The car has some irony: It's made by Isuzu It came with a steering wheel cover and seatbelt cover with Japanese symbols It has 54 stars and 16 stripes I've gotten another car and was planning on selling it. I'd been letting a very poor neighbor of mine drive it when I wasn't using it and over last weekend when I was in Florida I decided when I came back I was just gonna give it to him. Well he called me in Florida Sunday and said it was in a minor accident, and hit an "object" but was still driveable. I didn't press him on it and said as long as he was OK and the car was driveable who cares. Monday I get a call from the police that I missed. I call him and ask him what he hit and he doesn't know. I instantly start thinking hit and run. Turns out he was drunk and taking a drunk friend home. He stopped driving when his drunk friend asked him what the scraping nose was.... When I called the cop back he asked if he had permission to drive the car and said it was parked on the street about 4 blocks from the house. He also said my neighbor saw him hit the stone wall in the driveway (see the big pipe in the picture?) leave my house and keep going. I call him back and tell him to get the car back to the house. He says he'll fix it but he just started a new job. Thinking I'll either pull the bumper back with a crowbar or sawzall it and drive it to Carmax or the junkyard. Between driving it drunk, lying about the accident, and leaving it on the street, no way in hell he's getting it now. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
happythoughts 0 #2 February 17, 2005 I had a Chevy Spectrum myself. I drove 45 miles each way to work and the gas mileage was a lifesaver. I took it in for a drivebelt and lower seal change. On the way to work a week later, the lower seal blew. Apparently, the installation had been done incorrectly. I had 205,000 miles on it and decided to let it go and got a new Saturn. I certainly got my moneys worth out of it.
WFFC 1 #3 February 17, 2005 Spectrums ruled...had an 87 and ended up having to get rid of it when it had @ 200k miles on it back in 93. The Jiffy Lube twits forgot to screw the oil drain plug back in and when it dropped out, drained and all, it never ran the same again. bastages! btw, beat your 'friend'. It's acceptable in this case.----- ~~~Michael

wmw999 2,589 #8 February 17, 2005 But you could take it out to the DZ and donate it to some impoverished skydiver or college student. I've driven cars that looked much worse, and that paint job is a beaut. But remember -- when you give something away, it's theirs to do with as they see fit. Even if that means abuse it. Which is why I never give away things I care about to people I know -- no one can ever love used inanimate objects the way the original owner can Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
Bolas 5 #9 February 17, 2005 That was my original plan. I was going to sell it to a skydiver and he could pay me when he got the money. His dad then offered to help him get a car. Idea just popped in my head. Gonna post it in the Dublin Boogie thread. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. Bolas 5 #10 March 2, 2005 Captain America is back on the road!!! I had my neighbor that wrecked it finally just cut the bumper away from the wheel with some snips. The battery is basically dead, so I either have to pop the clutch or jump start it. But she is running and will make the trip to Dublin!!!Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
