I have this bluish colored thingly in the back of my computer I plug the screen thingy's wire into. It's right next to the spot where I plug in that really wide wire for my printer. I opened the side too (I feel so dirty, I broke the "Breaking seal will void warranty" sticker). Inside are a whole bunch of empty thingys with little metal prong thingys. I see 3 white ones and 2 black ones? So, why won't Unreal 2 work? It's your life, live it! Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that the new PCI-E cards/chipsets were for Intel based systems? If so, I'll stay w/ AGP. EDIT: Last time I looked I could only find PCI-E for Intel. I now see them for AMD based systems....my interest in them is now back... It's your life, live it! craddock 0 #12 March 2, 2005 Are you purchasing a pre-built machine or building your own? For true high end gaming, building your own machine is the best way to get the maximum perfomance for the dollar. Still an AMD XP or 64+ with a AGP 8X will be much better than what you are running now. I just built a nice 64+ system for a buddy with an AGP card that running awesome. If I was building I would go with the PCI E platform. There are several nice mb's to choose from. That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! ChasingBlueSky 0 #16 March 2, 2005 Yes for a few reasons. You can get the power you need to your video card without needing an extra 12v burst from a molex connector. Also, the architecture of it is better and in theory it will allow better graphics to happen....eventually. It will be probably close to two years to see games or programs that use PCIx to it's fullest potential. Games have to be backwards compatible for a while after new technology comes out and it won't be until the next big thing comes out that all that extra power is needed. Besides, there is a lifecycle to development that is always a generation or two behind technology. In IT hardware comes first, then the new software that uses it. Watch the Xbox and PS2 over the coming year - some of the best loooking games yet for those systems will finally hit the market just as the next consoles are getting ready to be released. Why? It took time to learn how to use the new technology, come up with an idea, design it, debug it and finally get it on the shelves. The same is true for PC games. I am not worried that I am still using an 8x AGP card. I should be able to get top graphic performance out of it for the next two years. I only just replaced my GeForce 4200ti within the last month and that was over two years old. However, there really are no wrong reasons to go with it now. The mobo's that come with it are affordable, the mid market cards are affordable and there is a larger selection of quality cards for PCIx than there are for AGP at the moment (ATI is having a hard time getting their x700 and x800 cards working on AGP due to heat and power issues). Also, if you have the money to waste, you can get an SLI mobo and two 6800GT's. The tests are starting to show a slight improvment in games using SLI. Yet, only the mightiest of geeks will think they need to run a game in SLI. If you are not using your system for gaming, there is no need for such a card or system bus._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... MWGemini 0 #17 March 2, 2005 I think the best thing about the SLI is that you can build a system now with a single SLI compliant card, and then in another year or two, buy a duplicate for cheap and see an increase in framerate on most games (which by that time will be requiring much higher specs than the system has). IMO, somebody who buys two $600 cards NOW is just wasting their money and should give one to me . Mike
flyingferret 0 #18 March 2, 2005 No...they just made a new standard because it is worse. Actually, define better. It is definitely better performing. But for right now the price is still abit high to switch mobos and vid cards. In a year, it will be the defacto standard I suspect.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
