jtval 0 #1 March 1, 2005 ok so I bought an IPOD and I am waiting for it to format on my computer so I can use it. thing is , I don't have a HIGH SPEED fire wire ( i thought the one I use to d/l footage from my video cam was highspeed, guess not) when I plugged it in I got the notice that said. no high speed firewire installed. functions may take longer to transfer.( or something along those lines.) how long does it take for the ipod with a high speed fire wire to initialize? does anyone use anything other than a high speed fire wire? how long does it take? it's been work ing for over an hour now. and its the MINI ipod (4 gb)My photos My Videos
murrays 0 #2 March 1, 2005 Firewire is highspeed. Period. Transfer speeds over Firewire to an iPod are very fast...to fill a 4 gb Mini should only take a few minutes....like less than 5. Are you using a USB connection? If you don't have USB 2 on your computer it will be really, really slow. USB 1.1 is deadly slow, downloading 50-60 mb if digital photos takes forever, let alone several gb of music.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
Misslmperfect 0 #3 March 1, 2005 i have the 20 gig, and i dont have firewire - just usb 2.0 i think. to transfer 13 gigs it took 6 hours. to fully load my husband's mini, which is 4 gigs, it took 2 hours or somewhere around there. its really not too bad - just have it update overnight! thats what we do.Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison! jtval 0 #5 March 1, 2005 damn, I was hoping I was doing something wrong. I am using a fire wire. DING DING DING!!! the llight just went on. no I am plugged into the USB port. I hooked up the ipod and didnt even think about what I was doing, just automation. it doesnt come with a fire wire cord. THATS WHY ITS TAKING SO LONG. but I didnt even try to transfer any music yet. its still initiallizing. says do not disconnect with the flashing (no smoking/ ANTI) signMy photos My Videos
eeneR 3 #6 March 1, 2005 With mine I had to go out and get a USB 2.0 card. It did nothing at all with my 1.0 port QuoteUSB 2.0 and FireWire 400 (with FireWire cable, sold separately) through Dock connector That was taken directly from the apple site for the Mini I had the same thing, it never finished initialized just sat there, then I remembered I didnt have 2.0. Ran out got the card and tada! Course this is on a 40gig Ipod, but I would think it would be the same thing. The only thing on the iPod site that shows support for 1.1 is the iShuffle. I could be way off in your case, but that is what happend to me. jtval 0 #7 March 1, 2005 ok , It just opened up. I guess it tries to download the WHOLE itunes library into the ipod upon initializing. that wasnt gonna happen LOL I read the box and it SHOULD HAVE come with a fire wire cord. Guess I have to go back and return it for complete set. GRR! I wanna go running today with it. this is holding me up!My photos My Videos
jtval 0 #8 March 1, 2005 yea I definitely have to get the fire wire for this thing. its taking (so far) 22 minutes to omport about 40 songs! and still working. GRR! in the age of high speed everything this way to load it sucksMy photos My Videos
haniel32 0 #9 March 1, 2005 The cord that plugs into the wall charger is the fire wire cable. You should invest a couple of bucks and get a fire wire card for your cpu. It's worth it. You can also change the setting in your itunes so that it doesn't try to load all your music when you plug your ipod in. Face first landing YET again! "I thought I flared" Grass tastes great!!!!! jtval 0 #10 March 1, 2005 lol I jsut restarted my computer b/c I found the fire wire. i got hom last night and plugged it in so it would be chraged this morning. but I didnt even look at teh wire I had to connect to the plug. it wasnt until I was about to box it back up that I saw it. I'm dumb I admit it. its SOOO much faster now!My photos My Videos

Girlfalldown 0 #13 March 1, 2005 Hey since you already have a post about Ipods let me break into it and pose my own lil question. What is the best music storage thingy out there that hold the most songs and is the coolest looking in the whole wide world EVER? I need one. -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)

JayFitz164 0 #16 March 1, 2005 If the songs are coming from itunes than the times you mentioned to sync your iPod are way too long. I flaked and deleted my iPod one time and had to reload my itunes library, 3800+ songs takes less than twenty min. If you are still having troubles check out www.ipodlounge.com those cats cover iPod like this board covers skydiving. fyi.. do a search... they have their own versions of crazy ivan, aggie dave, and all of the characters that are on here. Most questions have been covered and it is easier than searching the online iPod manual.
FallRate 0 #17 March 1, 2005 Here's a tip: Don't hold a guitar in your lap that is connected to a grounded amp while holding the IPod as it is being updated. Lots of unwanted shocks to the arm on the guitar strings. FallRate

jtval 0 #24 March 2, 2005 ok I just did the old "recycle power" to it and now it seems to be downloading some songs. its taking a while but its seems to be working. I have no idea why this thing is acting so goofed up. its should be as simple as load software plug in and transfer. this thing was not getting passed the restore point. i'm giving it this last chance before i go get my refund. My photos My Videos

I think you should give Apple tech support a call. I was also wondering what OS you are using.....I seem to recall that you need to have Windows 2000 or Windows XP. I bought my son an iPod Shuffle a few weeks ago and remember this being a requirement.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
