justme12001 0 #1 April 14, 2009 here is a removable slider that I made. Was trying to come up with an inexpensive way to have it come off without having to buy others rings. This system worked but..... the webbing that connects the rings seems to be my weak point as it is starting to melt from either friction or heat created from the opening force. I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas. Does anyone have pics of factory made sliders that they would be willing to share
riggerrob 643 #2 April 14, 2009 That style of slider ring is "old-school." Many first-generation sliders were built that way with tapes holding the rings. Others had the same problem with suspension line friction fraying the tapes. They solved it by switching to Kevlar tapes or wrapping them in cotton. But that style is now rarely seen outside of reserve containers. I have also seen plenty of home-made removable sliders with #8 grommets set into a triangle of webbing, then that triangle is attached to the corners of the slider by yellow cables. One disadvantage of brass # 8 grommets (the largest size that can be set with hand tools) is that they wear out pretty quickly when exposed to abbrassive Vectran or HMA suspension lines. That wear pattern just calls for more frequent inspections.
peek 21 #3 April 14, 2009 Nice design! With some work I think this could be perfected. Sliders are subject to a lot of violent forces, so of course, some of the mechanical issues of a design more complicated than a plain slider will need to be worked out. We tend to think of that rectangular thing we see as we look up on opening, but there is a short period of time before that where various parts of the slider are in contact with the (vibrating) lines, and can get friction burned and other things.
