Snowwhite 0 #1 March 4, 2005 So a friend of mine actually asked me a computer question this morning. Poor guy, thought I might know the answer. Lucky guy, I know you guys, and you probably DO know the answer. He used to have a 'wired' computer and was recently given a 'wireless' laptop as a gift from his very sweet daughter. He has the same internet provider as before (MSN) I think he has XP as his operating software. When he goes online, he is not able to stay online for long without being booted off. If he reattaches all of the connections to his modem, he can go back on line. Who should he call for help ISP? Local Service Provider (Mediacom) Computer Manufacture Software Manufacture any recommendations?skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com

I am assuming that he has high speed, but that is the one question I forgot to ask him..skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com

Zenister 0 #8 March 4, 2005 i'm betting his he has two competing programs (XP default and whatever wireless adaptor prog he has) competing for control of the wireless card... disable one or the other and he should be fine....____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Snowwhite 0 #9 March 4, 2005 Sounds like you and I are on the same page. When I had a similar problem, I called about a half dozen places before somebody finally walked me thru disabling, and restarting my computer. I just can't remember who it was that finally figured it out, and that takes me back to my original question. Who do you think I should suggest that he should call to talk him thru this?skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
Zenister 0 #10 March 4, 2005 if its a store built or brand name laptop and the wireless card is embedded, i'd suggest he start with the manufacturer.. if the wireless card is an add on he can try the card's manufacturer, or attempt to go to the properties for the wireless connection and disable "use windows to manage my wireless connection" (iirc.... guessing here as i'm not near a machine like that at the moment)____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Snowwhite 0 #11 March 4, 2005 Thanks, I'll take your suggestions to him, and see what happens. I'm a computer idiot, he knows even less. Even tho he's a really smart guy otherwise...skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
