I haven't even begun to read this entire thread, but it seems there are an awful lot of people against kids on the DZ for the kids own good (or am I missing something?).

definitely missing something.... its not the kids we mind at all.(I even spent a while teaching a little one how to fold a pilot chute properly recently)

kids (other peoples) are great, bring them out let them get some sun (but keep them off the landing area and out of my lines...particularly when they have icecream...[:/])....

we 'object' to the parents who expect us to curb our language and behavior because they brought their kids into our playground.....

I have absolutely no problem with children if they are well-behaved and their parents are able to educate them as you do. However, I will not (unless I am specifically asked) tone down my language just because some parents decided to bring their children to a place where you have to be 18 to participate.

Exactly! Parental/Guardian supervision is the key. This is true anywhere you take the kids. I would think as a kid, watching skydivers would be extremely exciting. I would not want to deny an interested kid that experience.

We cannot control anyone elses behavior, nor can we shield our kids from it. We can however educate them as to what we deem appropriate.

OK, Figured I was missing something.

My kids are at the DZ almost every weekend, I ask no one to "tone down" anything they do, and my kids know where and when they are allowed to be in areas (ie the packing and landing areas) and they also understand the ramifications if they do misbehave.

I also have no tolerance for misbehaving kids or parents that attmept their morals on others "just" because their kids are around.

I agree with you jeff. The problem is most young Americans have not been taught any type of Moral or Ethic code anymore. People believe its ok just to go around and say what ever they feel. Well , for them why dont they go around at Work in front of their Boss and say F... or something. Because they know its not accepted at the Work place. If that were the Case I guess the President could just walk around and say whatever he felt like F... S... Mother F..... in front of the Oval office or in Front of the Media. Bottom Line folks Grow UP learn something about Morals and Ethics it may save your life someday. If the DZ persists well I just dont go there or Jump and thats their Loss of Business. A good place of Business where everyone can enjoy a Sport has to have somekind of Guidelines Period. That way we can all Benefit from something we as Skydivers Enjoy in Life.

Kids should never be on the packing floor unless their parent or guardian is holding their hand. I grew up on a dz from day one and remeber seeing things that some people dont see until they are 21. I think I turned out all right. My parents put me to bed just after the fire was started, unless it was the 4th and then it was fireworks time. Some of my first memories are my dad telling me to walk behind the plane and walk around rigs, NOT STEP OVER LINES. That is the one major thing that bugs me about kids at dzs. Parents teach kids to step over lines when someone is packing.WRONG. Teach your kids to walk around rigs. I dont know how many times kids have snagged my lines trying to jump over them. I know not all dz kids are bad but weekend warriors bring their kids out for the first time and dont even watch them. At our dz the dzo kids and regular jumpers kids who are there all the time are awesome.:)And if your kid bothers me I will let you know and if my language bothers you and your kids, Stay at home or leave your kids in the car and bring the dog in.

Oh yeah
FUCK

I have been know to swear in front of my boss....no problem there..

And I vaguely remember Cheney and Bush both swearing by accident in front of the media.

Your morals are not mine. The word FUCK is not a bad word handed down by God. Its designation as a bad word was imposed by man and then incorporated as an offense to God later. Just because some societies agreed upon that ideal does not make it right nor does it mean I have to follow it.

So I guess I will just go on as I am instead of "growing up".

I wish I had a horse too. :S
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

What's up with all the Random Capital Letters in Your Post?

Are you German? Even then, they only capitalize nouns. :S

I agree with everyone else who said that a dropzone is an adult playground. And if you're looking for one where people are "mature" and don't cuss, check out Utah. I'm sure they have a couple.

Just to clarify things for me -

Define "better" Better how? Better in who's opinion?

and just for the record -

People that think they are better than others offend me.

you really need to do some research into the terms you throw around so liberally, as your use of them is severely flawed...:S

Morals and Ethics have nothing to do with your personal perception of certain words or where and how they are used..

and FYI F bombs and such are rather common around here. (one of the largest engineering/contracting corporations in the US) in fact my boss let one fly less than an hour ago... its a means of expression, nothing more and like all words only has the power you give/attribute to it..

Brilliant thread, everyone!
I've been hanging around DZs for all my adult life. They're ideal places for all of us who refuse to grow up.
They're populated by groups of foulmouthed, uncouth, badly behaved, unwashed but very memorable people. People who make up my oldest and dearest friends.
I also have a 12 year old son. If he hadn't almost grown up on DZs, I would never have seen him. He was almost born on one (6 hours after we left that day).
The profanity he hears, he accepts as DZ talk. He doesn't talk that way at home, and I doubt he's any more profane than his buddies at school.
My only proviso is that he goes to bed before the REALLY rough stuff starts at night.

do you guys use union labor? i'm a journeyman carpenter always looking for some tips on where i can find employment. talk about language differences at work: i was in the military for 11 years(4 as a combat engineer, the rest in a special forces unit)and a construction worker for almost 10. then i got a job as a telemarketer. talk about hard not to use "bad" language. my 2 y o sonhears stuff every now and then, but we try to limit it. he has been to the dz(military) before, he loves chopper jumps. whenever someone at one of our dz's brings kids, we try to watch our language around them, it's called respect...for the guy who brought his son/daughter to watch dad jump. if we feel the need to swear, we walk away from them. if they overhear something, oh well, look at where they are. and if you think it gets bad at a civilian dz, just think about all that adrenaline mixed with just testosterone(no women allowed in the unit-no supervision) then mix the alcohol in after the jump....i agree with the consensus, however i try not to do certain things in front of children it's the way i was raised.

Fuck everybody...I'll bring my fucking kid anywhere I fucking want. If you got a fucking problem with my kid than you got a major fucking problem with me.
My kid is fucking well behaved, he has more fucking manners than most adults I know. I bring him to the fucking DZ alot.He is great to have around and it's a fucking great environment.

Explicit language is everywhere!

I've taught him that some fucking people use explicit language for lack of any other way to fucking express themselves.

We choose not to talk that way;)

IF you read his last line, I believe he was saying that he chooses not to swear.

However, I see no reason not to use swear words in tandem with more a "dignified" vocabulary. I will not rule out 7 or so words from my vocabulary simply because they have been NAUGHTY. But then again, you would not believe the raping and pillaging that "fuck" does on a nightly basis. It's most definately a word that is horrible and should never be uttered in a sentence. It is probably the most evil word I have ever seen.

For instance is it much nicer, when killing someone, to day, "I am going to cut you from penis to cranium and then waltz on your lower intestines." than to say, "I am going to fucking cut you from dick to fucking head and then breakdance on you fucking guts."

Using the polite terminology, it almost seems okay to kill someone...so long as you don't swear of course. :S:D
