We have sunk into moral relativism: "there is no objective right and wrong; everyone is free to choose what they want." The flaw in that argument remains the same. By choosing to use profanity in public loud enough to be heard by children, one has forced his or her view of right and wrong on the listener and deprived the listener of the very right the speaker hold sacred.

I would definitely make the argument that we have RISEN to moral relativism, not sunk. In using the profanity and committing the actions that you find so questionable, I would argue that the skydivers you find so delinquent have actually done you a favor. They haven't "forced" their views on you at all. Instead, they've EXPOSED you (and your kids) to a different walk of life, one which you may choose to accept or reject. But the beauty of being able to say and act as we please is that we allow the general public to MAKE UP THEIR OWN MINDS about what they choose to think and believe. To me, that is a great gift, in part because it allows us greater autonomy in our beliefs. And, when I have kids, I hope that I can expose them to those different viewpoints early and often, so that they gain a sense of independance in choosing what they think is right for them.

We are all trying to make sense of the shadows on the wall. But it makes it a hell of a lot easier if you don't close one eye when you're doing it.

My two cents:
Is a DZ a place for children to hang out at all day? I think not, and they definately do not belong there after sunset. There is one thing that I noticed that no one has taken into account. Most DZ's are a place of business, and some customers bring their kids not knowing what our culture is really like. It is unprofessional and IMHO rude to swear or do some things in front of customers and especially kids, if they belong there or not.
I'm just as guilty as most of slipping around kids. Remember though, it is a business and the customers are what keep us in the air. At a boogie that is not running a business (Rantoul) or once the beer light is on, if one of those little fuckers are around I'm not holding back anymore. That was someone that knows better who made a bad decision to have them there at that time.:P

I definitely concur with that lambfucker as well...if I am right next to a kid. I can guarantee no swearing when I am packing or checking out video. Generally the kids are outside (where they should be).
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but would this shitstorm have been averted if the DZ in question had called it a MILK boogie 'Mothers I'd Like to Kiss' and held it on Mother's Day weekend??? And instead of beer, offer milk after the beer light goes on...

I think it would be canaryfuckingly brilliant.

Anyone who got the double entendre would probably think it was funny, and anyone who thought it referred vaguely to something less desirable would have the option of choosing to just believe the MILK.

Hmmm...just a few inconsistencies with your response...

I agree. DZ's are privately owned as opposed to being government institutions.
That has nothing to do however with whether the DZ is open to the "public."
"Public places" means open to the public; the term has nothing to do with ownership.
Take Walmart for instance or any other store: the stockholders own the store, not the government, but they are "public places" ie., open to the public.
At the DZ I regularly go to, the restaurant is open to the public, so is the spectator area and the store etc. Those are public places - skydivers and nonskydivers alike. The DZO's office, manifest etc are not open to the public.

You not only justify my argument - you make it for me...being 'open to the public' (e.g. a nightclub) and being a 'public place' (e.g. a city park) are two different things!
When I enter a public establishment like Wal-mart, whose original intention is to be a family establishment, I practice a little self-restraint and curb some of my language and actions. Because I try to comply with the 'atmosphere' of the establishment.
When I go to my dz...a PRIVATE institution with a known entrance requirement...where you had to be an adult to start skydiving, therefore, mostly adults go - I do not feel the same need to curb my actions - as I'm sure another adult either wouldn't mind what I do OR move away from it under their free will.

No one can force my family to watch inappropriate movies etc. Using profane language in "public places" on the DZ or not, is forcing profanity upon them.
I honestly believe what skydivers say or do on the plane, boarding area, packing area, training rooms etc etc. hey have a nut.

No, but you can force your family INTO that situation. Your argument gets at the very nature of censorship. DZ's were created for adults...and if you want to subject your children to that environment - YOU make that choice. If you don't like what you hear - keep your kids out of earshot (like I see most families doing)
But, (to use an analogy)don't turn on the radio to a station that you know plays good music and is geared for a particular audience...then criticize the station when they make a crude joke...and cry 'foul'.
If you don't like what you hear - change the station - but why change the station when they're doing what they did to make you start listening to them in the first place?

I'm sensitive to your plight - but - I also wouldn't bring my family around skydiving without taking a few precautions first...(like setting up their area away from the regular jumpers area)...and I would make sure that I had a little 'talk' with my kids to not repeat what they heard at a dz back at home. I know you're a good parent, but what do you really expect us to do - we're just blowing off steam...and I'm sure you are too - we just all have our own ways of doing it!!:)

I think what everyone is saying is that it is a dropzone. We are a different group of people for the most part. We say and do things that others may not like.

It is our play ground. If people don't like the way we play then they should go away.

You said that the DZ is not a Frat house or pool hallor biker bar. I don't know what dropzones you go to, but, that describes every DZ I have been to. We are part of a fraternity, a lot of DZ's have pool tables and bikers that frequent them.

At Perris we have the Bombshelter. It amazes em when people take there children to the DZ and let them run around the bar and restuarant and get offended when there kids here a cuss word. For Christ sake, it's a bar. People drink they do and say stupid things. If you don't like it take your kids to McDonalds or Chuckie Cheese.
