Deep sea fishing

Recommended Posts

I've been invited to go deep sea fishing with a couple of friends. Can anyone tell what exactly it entails? It sounds like a lot of fun though. I'd be cool if I caught a shark or something like that.

It's a lot like lake fishing, but bigger fish... If you've never been out of sight of land, I DEFINITELY recommend Dramamine - seasickness is NOT fun, and you WILL wish you were dead.....

all's I can tell you is :no matter how bored you get, DO NOT try and cast for SEAGULLS. Caught one once, and found out that they are a protected bird (go figure). Have to say that that bird put up one hell of a fight realing it in.....

Where are you going out of, and what is the expected catch?

As for dramamine, unless you want to sleep the whole trip, stay away from it. Any good fishing store or sporting goods store will have anti-seasick wrist bands for about $10 and they WORK, drug free.

The other things I will suggest, LONG sleeve shirt, reagardless of the temperature, you WILL GET BURNT on the water. Take LOTS of water to drink (beer is ok too if you KNOW you won't get seasick) but water is better.

Other than that, it is LOTS of fun. I have many many many hours on the water and it may be my favorite place to be (hearesy on this forum I know :o ) but there is not much to compare.

Most of all tho, HAVE FUN and enjoy.

Scott

I'm assuming we're leaving from somwhere near Panama City. As for what we're catching? I honestly have no idea. Hopefully a whale....riiiiiiiiiight...

Alana, if you can make it down here, you can come.:)
Sunblock/Long sleeve T-shirts are a good idea. Would tennis shoes work? I have aqua shoes too, would those be better?

Tennis shoes are fine as are aqua shoes.

If you are going out of PC this time of year, my guess is you will be fishing for grouper (my FAV fish) and you SHOULD do well. You will probably also catch a fair # of Snapper too, but those, you will have to throw back (out of season) :( .

And best of all, This time of year you MAY not even have to get out of site of land at PC to have a VERY good day of fishing. The water is DEEP (60 - 100 feet) within site of land out of PC.

Again, have fun, and if you have an xtra spot on the boat....... B|

If its an all day thing - don't start drinking too early - ruins it.

If you catch enough - they buy it back from you.
That is always nice.

In addition to sun-block, t-shirt, dramamine, shorts and shoes, wear a hat, if anything to save your head from hooks and such.

Also, KEEP YOUR THUMB ON THE REEL when letting line out. otherwise, you'll be fighting a birdnest in no time. Deep sea fishing trips usually have helpers. They'll help you get your fish off the hook, change out the leaders, etc. Tip them well. Especially, if they earn it.

If you're not catching anything after several "spots", that's when you really start drinking. Catching a "buzz" is better than catching nothing at all.

I once paid $80 for a half pound of fish, (that's $160/pound for you math impaired out there) and it was one of the most fun days of my life.

Also, if you're not smiling, you're not doing it right.

in a freezer :)
Better yet, you invite ALL your friends over, or you do a DZ cookout.

but for gosh sakes, DON'T sell it.

Scott

3.85$/lb x 120lbs = 23 jumps

I kept one -
you keep the rest if you want - I'll jump.

Last time I went I get a patch that you put behind the ear to cure sea sickness. It worked pretty well,

Towads the end of the trip the swells got a little bigger and I was startign to loose my sea legs.

Have Fun!!

you forgot to subtract 10lbs ea for heads, backbones and "innards" lol :P

and dont forget, you put that in the freezer, you dont have to go to the store to SPEND more money for food.

Oh, and next time you go, for $3.85 a pound, call me, I'll come get'em AND pay you $4 per pound. (your A$$ must still hurt from that) LMAO.

I keep my boat at the mouth of the Columbia River.. Usually I take some time in August for salmon season. Mid august the BIG Chinook are coming into the river. Earlier in the year there is sturgeon fishing. They only allow you to keep the ones that are 42" to 60".. the realllly big ones.. larger than 5' have to be released unharmed so they can spawn and keep the numbers up.

May is usually Halibut season. that is truely deep sea fishing. There are some good charters out of Newport that run out to Halibut hill. Its a very short season usually only 2 weekends like sun to thurs.

I've done several deep sea fishing trips. Despite what a couple posters say, the wrist bands don't to crap for severe seasickness, and taking dramamine while on the boat won't help, you'll puke it up. Take the dramamine starting the day before and the morning of the trip, you'll be much better off. We discovered this the hard way on a 12 hour trip. Chad was puking his guts out 1/2 hr into it and stayed that way until off the boat. He couldn't move, he was green, shaking, nothing helped. We learned our lesson then... Dramamine the day before.

Take food and beverage with you, coolers are typically not allowed on the boat so keep that in mind. Sunscreen is good, clothes that you don't mind getting drenched in seawater. I wear hiking boots, do beautifully on board.

It's a blast, I love doing it, and go out every chance I can get!

Dramamine will knock you out.
I think there is something else you can take that isn't as bad -- Bonine? Take whatever the night before.
Avoid cereal and grease for breakfast. Toast and bagel work fine. Coffee can chew up your stomach.
If you feel sick, stay outside where the air circulates but away from the exhaust & eat!!! Pretzels or crackers and a coke or ginger ale. Do not puke up wind!

Catch 'em up!
