okalb 104 #6 March 8, 2005 If it is under the skin it doesn't. You could walk through most metal detectors at airports with metal closed tightly in your hand and it won't set it off. That is why they make you take your hands out of your pockets when you walk through. Once I set it off and they had me walk through again with my hand over my belt buckle and it didn't go off.Time flies like an arrow....fruit flies like a banana

AndyMan 7 #10 March 8, 2005 Oddly, my parents who had knee and hip replacements do set off metal detectors. Perhaps someone who knows more than I do can explain why different metals are used? _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
Dougiefresh 0 #11 March 8, 2005 It depends on the application. For instance, you don't want your hip to be weak, but you want the joint to have low friction. So you're going to use materials that have the right characteristics. There's also the issue of the bio-material interface. When you implant something, the body has a healing response that depends in large part on the material's electrochemical and surface properties. You don't want a lot of scar tissue around the implant, but at the same time you DO want the cellular/bone structure to form a tight seal around the implant and integrate it into the rest of the body (i.e. not reject the implant). There's a large amount of research on polymer coatings for bio-implantable devices with the goal of guiding the immune response to what is an extremely traumatic event for the body. Titanium is nice because it's strong, light, and relatively non-reactive. Note I'm not a doctor, just a materials scientist with an interest in the bio-material interface.Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

psf 1 #15 March 8, 2005 to aviod all the scientific mubojumbo... titamium wasn't approved for instrumentation till not that long ago. Tried and true stainless steel was the mainstay of all instrumentation. Some Doc's still have a hard time convincing themselves that titanium is the way to go. Steel is the strongest, but there is next to no statisical diffence in titaniums strength.ignorance is not bliss
