turtlespeed 226 #28 March 7, 2005 QuoteA friend of mine gave me a call and asked if I'd be willing to do a walk for a breast cancer foundation. I agreed without question, and then realized exactly how far I was going to be walking. I've never done a 60 mile walk before much less in 3 days. How in the world do I train for such an event? Lots and lots af Advil and AleveI'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
ladyskydiver 0 #29 March 7, 2005 Outside is preferable - fresh air and all. But when the weather's crappy - aka snow, subzero temps, pouring rain - I'm an indoors treadmill or elliptical cross-trainer baby. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Stiner 0 #35 March 7, 2005 I'm doing the walk in Tampa, too! If you check out the website, they actually have an "optimal training program", that will give you an idea. I plan on using this as a starting point and then figure it out from there.

RoadRash 0 #37 March 7, 2005 A good walking shoe for women is Ryka...they are designed specifically for women's feet and I love 'em...Also...In terms of socks...I like hiking boot socks...but they are a little thick...Good choice would be a Gold Toe with reenforced toes and heels...I know they sell something like that at Lady Footlocker...Other than that...start hiking around your area...I like to walk trails at a local park...Also...walk to the grocery store/convenience store...Always good workouts......Wish you the best of luck and have a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!~R+R...~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Fly the friendly skies...^_^...})ii({...^_~... nacmacfeegle 0 #39 March 8, 2005 What terrain are you likely to encounter, Cora? 20 miles a day on road is completey different to 20 miles a day on mountain tracks/trails etc, and different again to open moorland.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. piisfish 140 #40 March 8, 2005 QuoteThat's only 20 miles a day, that's nothing. Buy a good set of walking shoes, good support and that fit perfectly. Too tight anywhere or too loose anywhere and you'll get some good blisters going. Get a few good pairs of socks, good quality. Break in the socks and shoes before the event. Go walk 10 miles today, you'll find that 10 miles is nothing. A nice camelback mule will help as well since you'll have water and pockets for snacks and such. Buy snacks you'll like, even if they're not as tendy or useful as a powerbar. good advice. I would also recommend not to walk with clean socks. Make sure you wear them the day before. They won't be dirty. But walking long distance in clean socks can be irritating for the skin. As Dave said, go walking. Carry some weight while walking (backpack, drinks etc...) Have some dry clothes in your bag so you can dry and change whenever you need. Actually I find it more difficult to walk without a bag on my back...scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM

jumpergirl 0 #42 March 8, 2005 I'm so glad you posted this and have gotten all of these wonderful suggestions!! I have been thinking about the same thing - how to train for it - and saw your post!! Since we'll be walking together, we can compare notes!! I do agree with you about the hottub and massage afterwards!! We'll have to work on that.
 ladyskydiver 0 #43 March 8, 2005 I'm ramping up my daily walking to follow what was suggested on the 3day website. And, now...I just have to go buy new shoes. The hot tub and massage - that's a requirement afterwards. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably.
