What is this guy flying?

Recommended Posts

looks like the wing partially collapses (he notes that the winds are pretty gnarly too and I hear that paragliding wings can collapse due to this)

perhaps a paraglider pilot would like to explain, im certainly interested in why this happened.

As a paraglider pilot, it looks to me like he hit turbulance (thermals can be sneaky buggers!) and I'm guessing that it must be a fairly high performance glider (DHV 2 or above) because it does not resume normal flight on it's own ..... but the also, pilot does not appear to put any input in to rectify the problem (counter the turn, damp the dive etc..) .... but he does get his reserve out in time and so gets to fly again.

An instructor of mine says "if you could see the state of the air that we're about to fly in...... you wouldn't bother!" ....... but we still do:S

Orly King was at our dz a couple weekends ago and had some freakin' bad ass video of paragliding. I watched a guy carve with his wingtip AND hip in the water for almost 270 degrees before popping up, leveling the wing, and landing on a beach.:o

With as many lines as they have and the shape of the airfoil, i would think that when things went bad, they went REAL bad. It wouldn't surprise me if he got caught in a down draft or something and that sent him in. The reserves are located under their seat and they have to throw them out kinda like an old belly mount.:D

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

looks like an Advance Omega 6 which is DHV 2 or 3

It's not just the number of lines, but their length and the performance of the canopy (they can fly very fast .... take a look at some 'Acro' videos - http://www.inair.nl/video/index.htm#movie.

The reserves are located under their seat

- this depends upon the harness.. some are under the seat, as you say (mine is), some are on the side and still others can be front mounted, very much like an old round jump set up.

I respect how much PG pilots know about the air............. I seriously think that skydivers and BASE jumpers need to learn SO much more about it - For anyone wanting to build their knowledge on the air then the book by Dennis Pagen - "understanding the sky" is a must read..........

Although I did find I had to read it a couple of times to have some of it sink in..........

Thoughts on this book from PG pilots?

The SAT is cool.... The axis of rotation of the spin is just above the pilots head (between him and the canopy) so the Canopy is flying forwards and the pilot backwards....

Take a look at the Helicopter as well, it's sort of like a flat spin in a plane... The canopy is horizontal (as normal) and the ilopt underneath and the axis of rotation is vertical through the centre of the canopy down through the pilot..... this one really seems to float (like a Sycamore leaf)...
