Balancing toothpicks and forks

Recommended Posts

Did you know that you can stick a toothpick straight up and balance another toothpick point to point at a 90 degree angle? It's really cool! You put two forks together and put the toothpick in between the two forks. Then stick the one standing straight up in a salt shaker. Then you just balance the other toothpick with the forks on the point. It has something to do with a fulcrum. What's a fulcrum anyway? I remember that word from high school, but I can't remember. I am sure it has something to do with center of gravity.

I just realized I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. But two toothpicks balancing point to point at a 90 degree angle is really amazing! Try it! Learn! Yay!
I'm so funny I crack my head open!

I used to do that all the time, then my dad got a job.

We need a photo to see what you're talking about...

Attached is a photo of my favorite restaurant trick - balancing a salt shaker on it's edge!

The trick is the salt crystals, which are tiny little cubes. I suspect this has a role in your toothpick trick also. You sprinkle a little salt on the table, then wedge the edge of the shaker amongst the salt crystals, and those little cubes fill in the space on both sides of the edge, holding the shaker at a tilt. Then you gently blow away any surrounding traces of salt, and it looks like the balancing act is a miracle. Then about that time, some jerk pounds his fist on the table and destroys it...

Man, deja vu...I can't remember how many useless evenings I spent with friends at Bob's Big Boy balancing everything on the table with salt. It'll work with just about anything that won't roll away...we did it with coffee cups, water glasses, the napkin holders...just takes patience and endless supplies of coffee.

We did it for three straight evenings once, leaving everything balanced on the table when we left. On the fourth day, we snuck in the Super Glue...needless to say, when the waitress spotted us watching from outside and howling laughter, we ended up paying for a new table...:)
