wmw999 2,589 #1 March 12, 2005 I'm trying to make my PC work with a TV. Right now, by using the S-video cable and the Settings for my background, I can see the background only on the second monitor (i.e. no icons, it's not just a second copy of my monitor), and when I run my mouse off the right side of my (because that's where the second-monitor screen is in the Settings tabs), it ends up on the TV. What I want to do is to show a slide show (i.e. out of a folder) on the TV. I really want to just plug the TV and the PC together, and have the TV be able to show what's on the laptop's screen. Obviously I'm getting frustrated. I can do the slide show by changing the background each time, but that's pretty hokey. I'd prefer something a little more elegant, so that I can just bring this over to my dad's apartment complex, give it to the activities director, and head off the the DZ to go jumping. If I have to mess with the background each time, I'm probably stuck there conducting the slide show. Ideas? I need a 20-year-old to tell me what to twiddle, please... thanks Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. RevJim 0 #2 March 12, 2005 Run the slide show in a window, and place that window on the tv screen/2nd monitor. It's not really as hard as you think, Wendy. PhreeZone 20 #3 March 12, 2005 Let me guess... Windows XP? Whats turned on is an option to "Extend Windows Desktop" to the second monitor. You have a few options here... you can either turn that option off which will then duplicate the original monitors output, OR you can drag and drop applications also to the second monitor and just run powerpoint directly on that monitor. Personally I like option 2 since you can keep everything else running on monitor 1 and not worry about it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
flyingferret 0 #4 March 12, 2005 Yep. If your mouse will go over there, other windows will go over there too. If yo ureally wanted, you can set which desktop is defualt under the display settings, you could make your TV the 'desktop'-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. wmw999 2,589 #5 March 12, 2005 D'oh. I had tried the "extend Windows Desktop" button, but that just made the TV completely black. Not an improvement, but at least it means I'm having an effect on my environment (sometimes I wonder). On the other hand, you're right -- I didn't just treat the second desktop as an extension of the first. I'd rather just duplicate the desktop, but this will work -- I set both to the same resolution, and I get what I'm looking for. Thanks, Rev. You're right -- it ain't rocket science . At work, we get one lousy monitor to work with (well, at least it's a flat panel now), so this double-monitor stuff is pretty racy. I'll still hold out for the holy grail, though... gerrcoin 0 #12 March 12, 2005 Regular TVs (not these new-fangled plasma or LCD screen jobbies) will only display at 800 x 600, any bigger than that and the picture will be larger than the TV screen area. You should be able to pan around by running the cursor to the edge of the screen, so don't panic if you can't see your icons or taskbar. Just knock the screen resolution back to 800 x 600 @ whatever colors you like. The display properties should be able to change the way you use your dual monitor setup and the option to duplicate the desktop will be there somewhere. Retired from IT at 34!? If you haven't done enough in IT to be doing pure theoretical and managerial duties by that age you should retire! Leave the grunt work for the kids and get your PMP, CISSP or CISA. Good luck with that exam, it's a tough one from my understanding. Going to back it up with a CCNP or CCSP? You should go for security clearance as well. Make sure you document your hours as a team or project lead. You will need that to apply to take the PMP test. I agree, the grunt stuff is more entertaining but the pay increase should help you deal with that _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... cameramonkey 0 #18 March 13, 2005 trying to get this back on topic... if its an Nvidia video card, check out your settings. You should find a setting called video overlay and turn it on. what happens is whenever you play a video in media player, it displays the video full screen on the TV.Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
