Dumpster 0 #1 February 22, 2005 My 13 year old son, Esau, is going under the knife a week from Thursday. (March 3rd) He lives with his Mom in Western NY, and will be getting surgery to correct a "lazy eye". We are all hoping it's 100% successful, since he has a keen interest in learning to fly, and to skydive. He'll be at Children's Hospital in Buffalo just for a day. Catch is - If they put him out, there's a 50% chance of success, if he stays awake, it's much better, almost 100%. I don't want to push him to choose staying awake. He does understand the odds are better, though. The young man is naturally a bit nervous, and I'm sure he'll feel the vibes coming his way. I'd like to thank you all in advance - -Lenny
AggieDave 6 #2 February 22, 2005 Wow, I hate hospitals and hate surgery even more then that and I can't stand anyone or thing even near my eyes...I feel for you son man. He'll be in my prayers.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
mailin 0 #3 February 22, 2005 I had the same surgery at 8 years old. I also went 'under' completely for it. I had been wearing very thick bifocals from age 2 - at age 14 they told me I didn't need glasses anymore Now I just use them for driving long distances (but usually forget I have them ) He'll do ok, its always scary. Sending good thoughts his way! JenArianna Frances
sunshine 2 #4 February 22, 2005 Can you elaborate on what the surgery entails? I had a lazy eye as a child and surgery was never an option so i'm curios about it. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! flyangel2 2 #8 February 22, 2005 Quote Now I just use them for driving long distances (but usually forget I have them ) You're lucky you have friends that have glasses you can borrow. I know two people that have had that surgery, and it worked great. BTW, your son can still learn to fly, I have a friend that has a glass eye and he has his license.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. skylord 1 #14 February 22, 2005 Lenny, In my thoughts and prayers. My sister had similar surgery back in the 60's done younger than Esau. I'm sure you've got the best lined up. I really don't understand the distinction with being awake or not making a 50% difference. I'm a pilot and air traffic controller, and lazy eye runs in my family. I lucked out in that I never had a problem, but as long as it is cleared up he will have no problem learning to fly (there are numerous one-eyed pilots) and as you know there are even blind skydivers. The biggest thing is the physical therapy AFTER the surgery. My sister never did the exercises and ended up having three surgeries that kept shortening the muscle on the weak side. I don't mean to sound over bearing, but you NEED to make him do the eye exercises. That is the key after the surgery. The most recent treatment I heard is that they actually inject botulism into the dominant eye and muscle to kill the muscle tissue on the strong side. Anyway, all my best to young Esau. We're hiring a bunch of air traffic controllers over the next ten years, it is a great career, and we'd love to have him come on board if he loves aviation! If the ex is being difficult, you still need info. from the doctor. After all, it's your son, too. Please know that many of us are all praying and sending good wishes out to you and your son.
