So, who's really down-under?

Recommended Posts

I've been asking that of teachers and Professors for years.

In my opinion, the only reason that Australia is "down under" and the rest of the maps are the way they are, is the location of the first few mapmakers.

Really.

If you were to map a new world, where would you put yourself? On the top, or on the bottom.

If the mapmakers had been from Australia or perhaps South America, it's quite possible that south could be up, and north down, when looking at maps. :)

The ancient Muslem and Egyptian cartogrophers always put south at the top of the map. For the Egyptians it was because they were used to the Nile river flowing down.

I've seen maps in European museums that were drawn like that, too. Disorienting after a life time of "North is up."

left and right with compass headings "up " and "down" with up and down expressed in negative and posative degrees. I guess it is like a submarine using the up and down angle on the diving plane.

Maybe the North Pole is on the left, and the South
Pole is on the right, and the earth is rotating
vertically from bottom to top.

I believe that was known as The Rotisserie Theory of the earth's rotation.

Your picture is upside down.

Don't know if this is true but, someone once told me
that the lenses in your eyes actually see things
upside-down ... and that your brain turns the image around.

!
