DickMcMahon 0 #1 March 19, 2005 From an outer space perspective, is Australia really down under, or are WE the ones upside-down? (Picture attached) And, if you jump down-under, do you fall "up"? More thoughts about Kangaroo Land
RevJim 0 #2 March 19, 2005 I've been asking that of teachers and Professors for years. In my opinion, the only reason that Australia is "down under" and the rest of the maps are the way they are, is the location of the first few mapmakers. Really. If you were to map a new world, where would you put yourself? On the top, or on the bottom. If the mapmakers had been from Australia or perhaps South America, it's quite possible that south could be up, and north down, when looking at maps. It's your life, live it! mcarchangel 0 #4 March 19, 2005 The ancient Muslem and Egyptian cartogrophers always put south at the top of the map. For the Egyptians it was because they were used to the Nile river flowing down.------------------------------------------------------- "These are the old days, the bad days, the all-or-nothing days. Don't know if this is true but, someone once told me that the lenses in your eyes actually see things upside-down ... and that your brain turns the image around.
