V-Dub freaks?

I am debating a purchase decision between:

05 GLI for invoice (around 22,600)
03 GLI VR6 for 17,9 - 20K miles
20th AE GTI for 21,500 - 15K miles

What would you get and why?

I guess my curiousity centers mainly around the engine. Until this morning was looking at 20AE for sure, then I found the GLIs. It seems like there is a buttload of support and aftermarket for the 1.8T. Yet the VR6 is not a bad engine. However, they did make the choice to go turbo in 04.

Anybody wanna egg me on?

They're both good engines, with the VR6 a little more reliable. It's got the better track record. The 1.8T had early oil sludging(sp?) problems with the turbo, that was remedied by using full synthetic oil and a larger capacity oil filter. VWs are great cars, but alot of people that buy them don't realize they are a high maintenance vehicle!

I have no problem with maintenance coupled with performance.

The turbo concerns are part of my debate. I am a touch cautious to buy a used one. Even in 15K miles, you can do damage.

From what I hear this seems to be the consensus : the 1.8T provides more 'zip' stock. The VR6 has a fuller power band, and more potential....with large money. But I don't want to void the warranty. And it seems I could do a lot with the 1.8T without doing that, and just changing full syth oil every 5K.

Fuck that, bring me the engine for your bus and I'll rebuild it, or bring everything (bus and all) down here and I'll it put together for you in a week. Then you'll have a cool VW.

Or I buy the Jetta, and then in 5 years I'll have two :)

Actually the big problem is too really redo the bus and have dependable transportation...I cant do it on payments.

You're right, but how are you voiding the warranty? By chipping it? I would also recommend the Full synthetic oil in any late model VW engine. But no need to change it that often, every 10k is ok.

Well, the VR6 advocates say go VR6 and super or turbo it. Something tells me that would void it.

You can build a very reliable old-school VW, but that means it won't break 10sec on the 1/4 mile...hell, it'll do good to break 90mph on a downhill.

My bus would be a bit shaky at 90.

BUT someday...it will be the dz mobile. I still dream. Like I said though $300 every month is so much easier than 10K. Cause it has to be my primary car, I cannot pay on a primary, a harley, and a secondary

Yeah, I understand. That's why my VW is on jack stands in the garage and the engine is on the engine stand.

my brother has 4 carrdo's with the VR-6 engine (his and his each of his kids.) good Engines.... but I bought a 2005 VW jetta with the TDi turbo diesel motor. it's pretty fast for a disel, but not as quick as the 1.8gas turbo.. but not that much differance.. but the Jetta TDI always gets a good 45 mpg. all the time. I fill mine up about every 3 weeks / 600 miles

The Mazada 6 is a badass car. I got to drive Pilot Mike's right after he got it. Holy crap it was NICE.
